700 million over 20 years (the new contract terms with this deferral), is not the highest paid anymore!

@ryfuzzi hmm, the payout is over 20 years, but he only needs to play for 10 years. So it’s a 10 year contract, with a 20 year payout.

He’s still the highest paid athlete as for each year he works, he gets 1/10 of $700M paid out (in his weird ass way). CBS agrees with me

predicted NO

@mattyb Gotta calculate NPV on this!

predicted YES

@ryfuzzi Even Wikipedia says Ohtani is #1 and getting $70M/year. That seems definitive @JesseCasas

He just signed a $700 million contract for ten years but I guess a lot of the salary is deferred. Would you count “highest paid” as “average over the contract life” or “salary paid in first year”

I've calculated the descriptive statistics for the 2023 season for the top four highest-paid pitchers and batters. OPS is an indicator of how much a player contributes to the team's scoring. Shohei Ohtani has an OPS that is 0.021 higher than the average OPS (1.044) among top hitters. As a pitcher, although Ohtani has the lowest number of wins due to injury, he has the best average in terms of AVG, at 0.98. Considering his top performance both as a batter and a pitcher, as well as being the HR leader and MVP in 2023, there’s no doubt he will become the highest-paid player in baseball this offseason.
