Would Manifold prefer to live under permanent Daylight Savings Time, or permanent Standard time?

“Permanent” means there would be no switch between Daylight Savings and Standard time at any time during the year - it’s either one or the other year-round. But which does Manifold prefer?

Edit: Feel free to read “Daylight Savings Time” as “Summer Time”, as appropriate. (Apologies to any non-North Americans who felt excluded.)

Where is the “I-don’t-give-a-fuck-just-pick-one-already” option?

@suzumebatchi I share your frustration, but I think the betting is showing that it’s not actually so easy to choose!

@themightysalmon then pick in the middle. Time is not discrete, it can be divided in half.

@KongoLandwalker That does seem to be a plausible option, yet I don’t often see it suggested. Perhaps another market is called for?

i reject your premise. it’s up to the states to choose, as it should be!

every state sits at a different part of the time zone, and has a different culture. some are morning people (ny), some are not morning people (california). that influences things. i wish more states held statewide measures about keeping permanent dst, abandoning dst, or keeping the biannual clock switch, and we could put this whole thing to rest.

@mattyb As this is a question of Manifold’s preference, I think you’ll find that all of these considerations are neatly encapsulated within the premise of the question. In fact, many of these considerations motivated me to ask the question in the first place.

@mattyb That said, thank you for spelling out some of the considerations explicitly. I used to erroneously assume that my personal preference on this issue was universal, and I find it worthwhile to learn how people come to a preference.

I do worry that having state-by-state time zones might lead to confusion, especially in the era of increased remote work. But we can agree that it would be nice to put this whole issue to bed!
