Introducing: FOLDED [48,000+ mana prize pool] Manifold's first community social experiment/art project
Jul 13, 2025

๐ŸŽด Introducing: FOLDED

Manifoldโ€™s first large-scale social experiment & art project

A test of patience. A battle of routine. A war of attrition.

Join the experiment. Win the prize.
๐Ÿ’ฐ 12,000+ mana up for grabs -- and the prize pool is growing!

WHAT IS FOLDED?

FOLDED is a minimalist game with a single rule:

๐Ÿ•› Check in once per day. Or be eliminated.

It sounds simple, but thereโ€™s a catch - it wonโ€™t stay that way.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ DAILY CHECK-IN

You must visit the check-in page once per day before midnight UTC.
Miss a day? Youโ€™re out. No second chances.

โŒ ELIMINATION

Players who donโ€™t check in are instantly eliminated.
Each day, the pool gets smaller. The tension rises.

๐Ÿ’ธ ENTRY FEE

To enter, send 2,000 mana to the prize pool via Managram.
Think of it as your ticket to the endurance games.

๐Ÿ† WINNER TAKES ALL

The last player standing takes everything.
Every mana from every eliminated player goes to the final survivor.

๐Ÿ”’ DIFFICULTY

It will become harder to check in over time.
The interface may evolve. The rules might twist.
Stay alert. Adapt. Survive.

HOW TO JOIN

Step 1: Pay your entry fee

Managram 2,000 mana:
๐Ÿ‘‰ https://manifold.markets/Bandors?tab=payments&a=2000

Step 2: Make your FOLDED account

No email required. Just your manafold username.
๐Ÿ‘‰ https://folded-three.vercel.app/

Is this a game? An art piece? A psychological experiment?

Yes.

(edited)

Doesn't knowing precisely how the game works and how it's going to change give you an advantage? I hadn't noticed that you were on the players list. It also means that if the site experiences downtime that requires work from you, the site coming back will be perfectly synced with your availability.

@SimonWestlake I cannot win. I'm just in the game world to be an overseer

EXPERIMENT BEGINS IN: 0d 8h 52m 2s

LAST CHANCE TO ENTER.

Can you beat these players to win 48,000 mana!

@Bandors they cannot

@Bandors Iโ€™m thinking about screen recording my attempts on the first few days. How long after midnight UTC would you consider a respectful amount of time before posting the dayโ€™s recording?

@LoganTurner you can post anytime, that's fine. If I do a riddle or something maybe delay then.

@Lorxus this seems relevant to your interests ๐Ÿ™‚

@snazzlePop Intriguing, but I'll have to pass. I'm still busy with real Tontine, to say nothing of life things. Thanks for thinking of me though!

@Lorxus Okay, just saying again, this is kind of like Tontine but I do plan on making it progressively harder to check in each day.

@Bandors I understand that. It'll be neat to watch.

If this were starting in two months from now, then Iโ€™d participate.

Itโ€™d be fun to have a โ€œRound 2โ€ competition with my former Manifold Ironman rivals @koadma and @jim.

Alas, I have several overnight camping / backpacking trips planned over the next six weeks or so, and Iโ€™d rather sit this out than predictably lose so early into the competition due to my pre-existing plans in the wilderness (where my internet service is spotty at best).

Related market that lasted almost exactly a year:

@evan @SimonWestlake Welcome to the experiment

@koadma Welcome to the experiment!

@koadma

Whoa. Youโ€™re participating in this?!

@snazzlePop Yeah, but I'm also pretty busy these days, and therefore I don't expect to stay in for long. The experiment seemed fun though, so I joined. We can have our rematch some other time :D

LESS THAN 24 HOURS TO JOIN
EXPERIMENT BEGINS IN: 0d 21h 28m 16s

@Kraalnaxx account marked as paid
@evan Earlier I deleted accounts not marked as paid, I think yours got deleted then. Go ahead and register again and I'll mark you as paid.

@Bandors It says my account doesn't have a "verified" deposit on the website. Since I gave you the Managram, could you make sure that's not going to lock me out once the experiment begins or something like that?

@Kraalnaxx okay I might have forgot to mark you as paid. Waking up, let me get some coffee in me

@Bandors Same thing has happened to me, and I can't even log in right now

@evan give me a bit, waking up and I'll check out what's up

Welcome @Reid to the experiment!

EXPERIMENT BEGINS IN: 1d 21h 50m 15s

@Bandors 14 players- can you beat 14 players for 44,000 mana?

Roughly how many days do you expect the game/experiment to last?

@Nat Hard to know how the players will do. I am not planning on arbitrarily eliminating players. I don't plan on any "Last person to check in today gets eliminated!" type things.

@Bandors is it possible for eg the last two remaining players to fail on the same day (i.e. a tie) and if so what would happen?

hacker??

@121

I want to learn how to float

@121 anti-cheat coming soon

@Bandors

its easy ๐Ÿ’€ just change tab when not jumping and midair

@121 um someone can be really toxic and create account on your website of another manifold user so they can not participate

@121 Lol. They could just message me on here if someone took their name. Registration will close here in a couple days when the experiment begins.

@Bandors

trolling

@121 lmao

@121 added check to prevent dupe usernames. doesn't really matter... the registration is closing when it goes live. Not sure how much dev work I want to put into people doing a little trolling before the event begins. I could add a captcha but like what's the point when registration is ending in a couple days. For now I just deleted accounts that are not yet marked as paid. Working on a anticheat for the main event for now...

@Bandors

emptry charectter "โ€Ž"

i see you added new audio jumpscare

Who spent so much mana to boost this post the last few days? That is nice of whoever that is

@bagelfan used mod powers to do a free boost iirc

@121 The UI is also bugged, so it appears boosted even though the boost has expired

@Bandors what happens if the giant dog in hell touches you?

@Kraalnaxx He's just there for looks

@Kraalnaxx Also, I am pushing some updates right now so things might get weird for a minute. Trying to polish it all up before the experiment really starts.

Iโ€™m already on level 4 and I donโ€™t think anyone has made it past level 2 yet, unless their avatars arenโ€™t showing up

I think you might be on the wrong website

@Bandors shhhhhhh

@evan @Kraalnaxx Welcome to the experiment

@Bandors EXPERIMENT BEGINS IN: 3d 0h 6m 31s
PRIZE POOL: 44,000 MANA

(edited)

Disregard this message.

You know what? Let's do it.

@Bandors what motivated you to create this experiment? you do not get any mana from it

@121 Art/Fun/Something to pad my portfolio later

Any hints about the challenges? Will it involve strategy? Luck? Puzzles? Dexterity? Speed?

@A I can promise that you will not be eliminated due lack of physical strength or gamer skill alone.

@Bandors Also, you will not be eliminated purely because of luck.

@bens Welcome to the experiment.

the platforming with the 40 stones is easy (hold jump and alternate left and right) by the way

@121 not challenging enough

@121 Like most things in life, things are easier if you take a second to stop and think about your approach!

@121 hit box for stones a little big. I'll adjust when I wake up. I'm also going to make a basic anticheat

HELP! I FELL OFF!

@100Anonymous Walk around, you'll find something.

@Bandors so difficult to get back up!

@100Anonymous It's getting you ready for the main event. Think of it as practice.

@Bandors I reached the top. Phew! I should be careful

can I be resurrected?

๐Ÿค‘ Prize pool is upto 38,000 mana!

14 players so far, + a generous 10,000 donation from @jim

@Wott @hecko @LoganTurner @Adaury Welcome to the experiment.

Do players need to check in on a device with a hardware keyboard? Any plan to support mobile browsers?

@LoganTurner Phones are not supported, I hate mobile users, they ruined the internet. Google forced websites to have good mobile support for better SEO. This killed historic platforms such as forums, as forums are for long form discussion and inherently bad for the new SEO algos.

tl;dr mobile users are cancer on the web

@Bandors no mobile support = I'm out

@Bandors Might be worth tweaking the description to something like,

You must visit the check-in page on a desktop browser once per day before midnight UTC.

So you donโ€™t get a bunch of refund requests

@LoganTurner The website is linked in the post. People can try it out before paying. Technically mobile users can still participate, I am just not catering special controls to them to make it easier for mobile users.

@Bandors That's actually what I did, and I was still confused: I visited the page on my phone, signed up, and part of the not-confirmed message was cut off. The player character was totally off-screen, so I wasn't even sure if I was missing something. That's why I ended up asking you about it.

Till when can you join? Or which team need a team player?

@TheWabiSabi EXPERIMENT BEGINS IN: 4d 15h 31m 1s

There are no official teams.

@Bandors how many have joined already, and what happens when you receive more than 30.000 mana, is that just profit for the game master?

@TheWabiSabi I am adding all new entries to the prize pool. I am crunching numbers and calculating the new prize pool now, we had a few people join!

The only winning move is not to play

(edited)

@jessald (This is actually the way to lose)

@jessald The only winning move is to win.

@Mattt Welcome to the experiment!

@Quroe @AndrewG Welcome to the experiment!

you think I have 2000 mana just lying around??

in this economy????

Put me in, coach!

@Bandors In your opinion, if I launched Nash Pit Episode 2's Contestant pool markets now, would that be helpful or hurtful to this game show?

I can't tell if simultaneous game shows running in parallel world synergize or compete with each other.

@Quroe I think it would steal spotlight ngl

@Bandors I'm guessing you don't intend to drag this out for months, right? This seems MSCHF Tontine inspired, but do you think this will finish off in a month?

@Quroe see also:

@Quroe I'll meet you in the middle, give it two weeks? Then registration would end, my experiment will be running, and I wouldn't be looking for more players anyways. iirc the MSCHF one is easier to check in, where as mine, each day it will become harder.

(edited)

@Bandors Got it! I have the Nash Pit Ep 2 Contestant selection market saved in my market drafts and ready to post at any time.

I've been holding off on posting it because I've had some life events to keep up with, so I wanted to ensure I could properly run the game show around my new life.

I hope this game has no platforming.

@121 Platforming is not the central theme. Players won't be eliminated simply for falling off. The theme of the challenge is Consistency & Effort VS Reward

@Bandors nice to know

@Bandors I asked because the death message says players will be resurrected during registration phase so I thought it might mean players would not be resurrected later

@121 I'm pushing an update later today that will clarify what will happen :D

@andri @Jim Welcome to the experiment.

(edited)

I propose to form a team of 5-10 individuals using a shared account, with entry fee divided accordingly among the participants. This allows for broader participation and I believe will have some other benefits as well. Please message me if interested in joining my team for more details. EDIT: Teams are not allowed apparently.

@A hmm, I feel this breaks the spirit of the game, tbh

@A imho the optimal team size is likely around 2 or 3, I think with more people you get into "I assumed someone else would do it" territory

@bens I will defer to @Bandors whether it is allowed.

@retr0id Perhaps, feel free to make your own team of a different size if you think so :)

@A I think I will not allow this, I want to encourage as many unique players as possible.

@Bandors Okay, proposal rescinded then

Alternate idea: sub-pools. Players can team up and share the winnings based on a mutual agreement.

@Quroe this seems more reasonable!

@Quroe I don't mind if you agree to split winnings. Just make sure people who are teaming all have their own account. Teaming up won't give you an advantage over other players outside of hedging your bet if you get lazy and forget to check in one day.

@bens Join the experiment!

Any way there could be a cheaper entry fee?

@sahaj The entry fee needs to be high enough where people take it seriously.

What is the deadline to sign up by?

@Quroe EXPERIMENT BEGINS IN: 4d 23h 58m 29s

I assume you're in @snazzlePop and @koadma?

@jim been thinking about coming out of retirement for it but feeling reluctant.

My life is busier now since the Ironman Championship, and I spend less time on Manifold.

Six players so far, and a 22,000 mana prize pool! Come get your spot for this event! Now with 200% more website security

I am offering bootleg account activations. Only 20 mana each. Please don't ask any questions. All sales are final.

@retr0id lol. time for me to open up burpsuite and see how you did that... I thought my RLS was decent

@retr0id oke I think I fixed the security. Try refreshing and attacking it again. Sending you a mana tip for bug bounty.

@Bandors Seems unfixed still

@retr0id had old RLS, try now...

@Bandors still unfixed

@retr0id give me 15 minutes I am doing a better check

@Bandors may I ask if this was vibecoded? the auth system unfortunately seems completely broken, I don't think this is something you can fix in 15 minutes

@retr0id It just had old RLS. It should be fixed now. I don't think you can mark things as paid anymore.

@Bandors nvm lol give me the full 15

@Bandors I have to sleep now, but good luck with the rest of the 15 mins ;)

@retr0id I think it's fixed. Tested security, moved has_paid to a different table, did some basic pentesting on it myself, I think it's good...

@Bandors Seems good on the has_paid front now. But there's nothing stopping me from updating another user's position without auth.

@retr0id are you sure? I'll double check, but try raising another player up in the air so I can confirm?

@Bandors okok yeah I am fixing it

@retr0id Stuff like this is why I am having registration window for a week, should be enough time to find problems before the experiment officially starts.

@retr0id Okay I think everything is good and I added session tokens to prevent people from multi logging

@retr0id I just saw that

@121

patching it up, I see the problem, adding a server side session validation to fix...
Will tip another 100 mana for your efforts, thanks.

@Bandors okay, patch is live.

@Bandors

I thought my RLS was decent

had old RLS, try now...

It just had old RLS

I'm sure you're referring to something else but this is the only thing that comes up in the entire page 1 of search results if I web search it lol

@TheAllMemeingEye My best guess is "Row-Level Security"

@bohaska ๐Ÿ† You got it

@bagelfan @nikki @retr0id

Account marked as paid. Welcome to the experiment.

โš ๏ธTrade offerโš ๏ธ

You receive: 60 mana (instead of 2000 mana)

I receive: (60/2000)*100 = 3% of the prize if I win (rather than 100%)

@TheAllMemeingEye I would offer you 1940 mana in exchange for 97% of the prize if you win, but I think a buy-in of only 60 mana is not enough to motivate you to win

@retr0id a very intriguing offer! I suppose it could work like us pooling the mana for the ticket and dividing the winnings accordingly, with me playing on our collective behalf. I'm mainly proposing 60 mana because that's approximately the most I emotively feel comfortable having a high probability of losing.

@TheAllMemeingEye It is a +EV proposition for the both of us if we think you have a higher-than-average chance of winning vs the other contestants. And I think that's unlikely if you have less at stake vs other contestants - but I could be convinced otherwise!

@retr0id hmmm, I have pretty long streaks on here and Duolingo

but at the same time I don't have much experience with puzzle games.

Would you be open to being the player instead under a similar-ish mana split? (not sure if it benefits you for me to be contributing/taking more or less)

If you get stuck on a puzzle you can message me and I'll try to help you solve it at some point that day.

(edited)

@TheAllMemeingEye OOH, my duolingo is 441

@TheAllMemeingEye could you be convinced to go up to M100? If you were and @retr0id were also interested, I'd be happy to go halves in helping sponsor your run

I.e. an entry fee split of 100:950:950 (and proportionate winnings split)

Also open to other proposals (and ofc you're also more than welcome to ignore my proposal)

@Nat would you also be willing to help brainstorm puzzle solutions if I get stuck?

@TheAllMemeingEye Trade request denied, lol. People need to have skin in the game.

@Bandors is the later proposal for achieving a similar end via pooling the cost with other users also forbidden?

@TheAllMemeingEye Trying to keep it simple. 2k mana = one ticket, ticket given to the user who sends the mana. If you make a deal between each other, that's between you two.

@Bandors

People need to have skin in the game.

@TheAllMemeingEye can't guarantee I'd always be able to respond in a prompt enough manner to be helpful (most weekdays would be unavailable outside of roughly 02:00-10:00 UTC) but yeah if I'm free I'm absolutely happy to help (and I have been known to enjoy a good puzzle or two ๐Ÿ˜)

@Nat @retr0id ok although right now I'm focussing on this market ( /TheAllMemeingEye/will-i-successfully-respond-to-all ), fortunately we have 5d until the game starts, so tomorrow probably I'll request your contributions to the ticket and enter, if you're up for it still

@TheAllMemeingEye FWIW, if @retr0id is not interested in my proposal, I'd also be happy to simply cover the remaining 1900 mana for your entry myself (i.e. an entry fee split of 100:1900, and proportionate winnings)

@TheAllMemeingEye @retr0id

Still interested?

@Nat My apologies, I think I have to decline, I am struggling to stay on top of tasks, such that I don't think I would be able to effectively compete, but best of luck if you still want to enter yourself

@TheAllMemeingEye that's perfectly fair and very understandable, I've been hesitant to enter myself for precisely the same reason haha

Best of luck getting on top of things though!

"your account has not yet had a verified deposit" (but maybe you're doing it manually?)

@retr0id Yeah, I'm doing it manually. I see your payment, I'll activate you when I wakeup. Welcome to the experiment!

I'm in an Asian timezone so I need to head to bed. Four players so far, 16k mana prize pool :o
btw, thanks to @jim for a generous 10k donation to this prize pool!

Can I have a cheaper version? Like 500 mana please (i dont have mana)? please? :3

@121

>_>

then can i pay 1000 mana please :3 thanks!

@121 I'm gonna go broke if I cover everyone's entry fees. Other guy was a genuinely low balance new manifold user :v

The risk of losing 2k mana is what makes the experiment interesting...

@121 Thank you for joining the experiment. Account marked as paid, and prize pool will be updated.

Can we have a cheaper version? like 300 mana?

@100Anonymous I will personally cover your remaining 1,700 for the prize pool.

@Bandors Thank you so much!

@100Anonymous Managram me the 300 and then sign up, and I'll mark your account as paid and add the remaining 1700 to the prize pool.

@100Anonymous Account marked as paid. Cheers.
