Will generative AI like ChaGPT change the way teachers teach and students of all ages learn in Germany? Will it impact policy related to education in a country that’s not known for swift adoption of new technologies?

Resolves to yes if the curriculum in one or multiple states will change in a way that can be traced back to developments in generative AI, even if the change goes into effect only in subsequent years

@traders @polarblau I see no indication that this has happened, ping me if you know otherwise

@Bayesian I agree this is a NO, Gemini tells me NRW is the furthest ahead and https://lehrplannavigator.nrw.de/system/files/media/document/file/klp-entwurf_vb_sii_gost_biologie.pdf indeed mentions KI in a couple of places, but it's a draft from 2025 and so doesn't meet the "by end of 2024" restriction in the title.

How will this be measured? Whats the definition of “significant”?

@FatihKurt If the curriculum in one or multiple states will change in a way that can be traced back to developments in generative AI I‘d consider the impact substantial. Even if the change goes into effect only in subsequent years.

Education has already been significantly affected. "Das Ministerium für Schule und Bildung stellt daher den Schulen einen Handlungsleitfaden sowie weitere Informations- und Vertiefungsmaterialien zum Umgang mit textgenerierenden KI-Anwendungen zur Verfügung." But I guess this is not what you're looking for - can you provide more detail on what a yes or no would look like?

@fwbt I would define a significant change as change to the „Lehrplan“, either removing or adding requirements. Would make sense?

@polarblau Currently it's only mentioned in the context of Informatik (I only searched in Bayern). https://www.vodafone-stiftung.de/ki-an-schulen/ calls for introduction to the use of ChatGPT in Grundschule - so maybe it would be sufficient if 1 or N states mention "KI" in their Lehrpläne for Grundschule? I can't find anything concrete about when they get updated, so seems at least possible that it could be changed this year. I guess widespread (and presumably ineffective) ChatGPT bans would not count?

@fwbt It’s an interesting thought, but I don’t think it qualifies as it doesn’t change the mode of business.
