Suggest events like Manifest

I’m wondering what other manifest-like events are out there. I’ll give up to 5k mana to whoever suggests a similar multi-day event that I attend and enjoy.

Some tips:

  • Tell me a bit about events you’ve personally been to, and what the experience was like.

  • Within driving distance of the SF Bay Area is best, but anywhere in North America works too.

  • Big, multi day events with lots of time to meet people are what I’m looking for, but I may give smaller rewards for smaller events that I enjoy

  • I’m looking for groups of people who are a bit nerdy, enjoy challenging the status quo, and are fun to be around. I’ve noticed that lots of EA / rationality folks fit this description, but I’m open to anything.

  • my interests include: software development, machine learning, economics, personal development, creative writing, and game development. but I’m generally down for a good time, so stuff outside of those interests is fine

I’ll also be awarding 100+ mana to high quality suggestions, thanks for the help!

I'm 90% certain you've already thought of it but I may as well mention EAG and EAGx, there's usually at least one in the Bay Area each year

Several events that share Manifest's DNA of intellectual curiosity, community building, and multi-day immersion:

1. LessOnline (Berkeley, CA) - The rationalist community's annual gathering. Multi-day, heavy on prediction markets, AI safety discussions, and unconference sessions. Very close to Manifest's crowd. Usually held in June.

2. South by Southwest Interactive (Austin, TX) - March, multi-day. More mainstream than Manifest but the Interactive track has excellent tech/future-of-society content. Great for serendipitous meetings. The hallway conversations are the real event.

3. EA Global (SF Bay Area) - Effective Altruism's flagship conference. Multi-day, heavy on 1:1 meetings, unconference format. Strong overlap with Manifest attendees.

4. Recurse Center Never Graduate Week (NYC) - Annual alumni gathering for the Recurse Center programmer community. Multi-day, strong intellectual culture, lots of pair programming and presentations. Worth the trip.

5. Solstice (NYC/Bay Area, December) - Rationalist community winter gathering. Shorter than Manifest but very high-quality social connections.

6. Burning Man adjacent: Ephemerisle (Sacramento Delta, CA) - Floating festival on the water near SF. Very Manifest-adjacent crowd. Peter Thiel and rationalist community overlap. Multi-day, aquatic.

7. Progress Studies conferences - The Progress Conference (Austin) or Roots of Progress events. Multi-day, intellectual, focused on technology and civilization progress.

For the closest Manifest experience: LessOnline is the obvious pick. For broader exposure with similar energy: EA Global or SXSW Interactive.

Defcon has gotten too big, but is worth considering

Berkeley Thursday Rationalist dinners. Shattuck avenue. Dinner and conversation. And then afterwards people go to a nearby grouphouse and talk further.

Sooo, after some talks I’ve managed to make Manifest work with the schedule, so I’ll be attending this year 😄 (also doing LessOnline and the camp thing during the week)

Despite that, I’ll be keeping this market up and still paying out, since I’d still like to know about other events.

@TonyPepperoni alternatively (hear me out) you could just come to Manifest? 🧡

let the records show: it turns out I had the most convincing suggestion here after all 💅

okay first of all: how much does it clash between commitments and time zones? can I prop up my phone for a video call bidirectional livestream so you can join us for some bits? :)
