Resolution criteria
This market will resolve to YES if, at any point before January 1, 2100, the world enters a state of global totalitarian dictatorship. Specifically, this requires at least one of the following conditions to be met:
Unified World Government: A single sovereign global governing body is established that exercises political authority over at least 80% of the world's population, and this body is classified as a "closed autocracy" or "totalitarian" equivalent by the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute, Freedom House, or their direct institutional successors.
Absolute Hegemony: A single nation-state classified as a closed autocracy or totalitarian regime achieves undisputed global hegemony, exercising direct control or de facto political/military veto power over territories containing at least 80% of the world's population.
Institutional Consensus: A consensus of at least three leading global risk or international relations research institutions (e.g., the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, the Future of Life Institute, or the Global Challenges Foundation) formally declares that humanity has entered a state of "global totalitarianism" or a "permanently locked-in global totalitarian regime".
If none of these conditions are met by January 1, 2100, the market will resolve to NO.
Note: If the referenced tracking organizations (V-Dem, Freedom House, etc.) no longer exist and have no direct successors, the market will resolve based on the consensus of peer-reviewed political science literature or equivalent global governance databases at the time.
Background
The concept of "stable global totalitarianism" is widely analyzed in the field of existential risk and longtermism (popularized by researchers at institutions like Oxford's former Future of Humanity Institute). Unlike historical totalitarian regimes (such as Nazi Germany or Stalinist USSR) which eventually collapsed or were defeated by external powers, a future global totalitarian state could theoretically leverage emerging technologies—such as ubiquitous AI-driven surveillance, automated enforcement, and advanced cognitive or behavioral control—to permanently eliminate the possibility of internal rebellion or external intervention. This could lead to an indefinite "lock-in" of a single regime's values, representing a major catastrophic risk to humanity's future development.
