According to Wikipedia’s List of Incidents Involving Commercial Airplanes, we’ve had 3 incidents in January already (list below), when a typical year only has 10-15 total. How many total incidents will Wikipedia report happening in January 2024?
January 2 – In the 2024 Haneda Airport runway collision, Japan Airlines Flight 516, an Airbus A350-941 operating from New Chitose Airport to Haneda Airport, collides with a Japan Coast Guard De Havilland Canada DHC-8-315Q aircraft while landing. All 379 occupants aboard the Japan Airlines flight are evacuated safely, while five of the six occupants aboard the Coast Guard aircraft are killed. Both aircraft are destroyed. This was the first hull loss of an Airbus A350. The destroyed DHC-8 was set to provide support in the response to the Noto earthquake the day prior.
January 5 – Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 departing out of Portland International Airport, suffers an explosive decompression when a plug covering an unused exit door blows out. The aircraft makes a safe return to Portland, all 177 people onboard survive. Nobody was seated next to the blown out door. No injuries were reported on board.
January 19 - Southern Airways Express Flight 246, a plane took from Dulles International Airport and was on its way to Lancaster Airport, when due to bad weather conditions, the plane emergency landed on a parkway in Aldie, Virginia. 1 person was injured.
Sorry, I had to N/A this market as Wikipedia removed the third incident, so now 2 is the most like and current answer, and I can’t add any new ones.
Bc there have been a bunch this month, I’d expect aircraft manufacturers and airlines to be on heightened alert for the next few months. Similar to when the safest time to eat chipotle is after diseases from their lettuce has gotten out
