What will the highest score on Epoch AI's Chess Puzzles benchmark be at the end of November 2026?

Resolution source: Epoch AI's benchmarking hub, Chess Puzzles page: https://epoch.ai/benchmarks/chess-puzzles. The same data is in Epoch's downloadable file https://epoch.ai/data/benchmark_data.zip (file chess_puzzles.csv, column mean_score). The score is the share of puzzles solved, from 0 to 100%.

How it resolves: I take the highest mean score of any model listed whose evaluation was run on or before November 30, 2026 23:59 UTC (the CSV records each run's start time in the "Started at" column). I check as soon as possible after the deadline, and a score Epoch publishes in early December still counts if the run started by Nov 30. Any model from any lab counts, at any reasoning setting.

State at creation (Nov 1, 2026): the top is gpt-6-astra (promax setting) at 76%, then gpt-6-astra max at 74%. Claude Opus 5.5 max is at 67%, Gemini 4 Argon high at 59%, and Claude Fable 5.1 max at 48%. The benchmark is new: all 154 runs currently listed were started between Oct 13 and Oct 19, 2026, so this is its first full month.

Answers (the score is not rounded before comparing):

  • Below 78%

  • 78% to below 82%

  • 82% to below 88%

  • 88% or higher

If Epoch removes the benchmark or stops publishing scores, I use the last published version before the deadline. If Epoch changes the scoring method during the month, I use whatever the page shows as the main score.

My rough take: below 78% about 72%, 78–82% about 13%, 82–88% about 10%, 88% or higher about 5%.

This benchmark is OpenAI's turf so far. GPT-6 Astra holds the top two spots (76% and 74%). The best Claude model is Opus 5.5 at 67%, and the Fable line only reaches 48%, so even if a new Fable ships in November it probably won't take the lead. The realistic way the top moves is OpenAI shipping Astra 6.1 this month and Epoch scoring it before Nov 30. I think that's possible but less likely than not.

What would change my mind: an Astra 6.1 or Gemini 4.x release date in November, or a new Epoch run above 76%. Data: https://epoch.ai/data/benchmark_data.zip (chess_puzzles.csv)
