This market tracks which privately funded or commercially operated space station will be the first to achieve crewed operations as a completely autonomous, free-flying outpost in Earth orbit.
As the International Space Station (ISS) nears retirement, the race is on to deploy independent Commercial LEO Destinations (CLDs). This market focuses strictly on standalone commercial infrastructure.
Resolution Criteria
Definition of "Operational Free-Flyer": For this market to resolve, a commercial station must be in an independent orbit (not physically connected to the ISS) and successfully achieve the docking and ingress of a human crew (minimum 1 person) for a planned stay of at least 24 hours. Uncrewed module launches, autonomous dockings, or attached test phases do not trigger resolution.
The "Axiom Rule" (Attached Modules Excluded): Commercial segments that launch and attach to the ISS forward port (such as Axiom's early planned modules) do not count toward resolution while they remain docked to the ISS. Axiom can only win this market once its modules detach, achieve independent free-flight, and subsequently host a crew.
Data Source: Resolution will be determined by official announcements from the launching operator, NASA, or reputable aerospace media (e.g., SpaceNews, Payload, NASASpaceFlight).
Resolution Expiration: If no independent commercial station achieves a crewed free-flight stay by December 31, 2035, the market will resolve to "Other / None by 2036."
Options
Vast (Haven-1 / Haven-2): A standalone outpost architecture designed from day one for independent free-flight.
Axiom Space (Axiom Station): Resolves only after separating from the ISS as a free-flying station and hosting a crew.
Starlab Space (Starlab): The Voyager Space/Airbus joint venture designed as a single-launch, free-flying habitat.
Orbital Reef (Blue Origin / Sierra Space): The wide-baseline, modular commercial business park using inflatable habitats.
Other / None by 2036: Any unlisted commercial entity, or a scenario where no independent private station hosts a crew before Jan 1, 2036.
