He's apparently doing Mae-zumo in November 2025.
For Aonishiki recently, he started at Jk and then lost a total of 4 matches over 6 basho on his way to Juryo, and somehow passed through Juryo in just 2 more tournaments to make Makuuchi after 8 basho.
Can Asahifuji (formerly Ochirsaikhan) make it through 6 consecutive basho without a loss on his way up the ranks?
Resolves No as soon as he loses a match. Including if he loses in Mae-Zumo.
If he loses in a play-off for any division, that counts as a loss. He would no longer be undefeated for the purpose of this market.
If he sits out a tournament that also counts as a loss. Basically he has to win every possible match.
Presuming all goes well, he would probably be:
Jk in January 2026
Jd in March 2026
Sd in May 2026
Mid Ms in July 2026
High Ms in September 2026
??? in November 2026
If he wins fast enough that he makes it to Juryo by the November 2026 tournament, then he would sure have a tough time winning 15 in a row there, even if he is as good as an Ozeki. But if his promotion ends up taking 3 rounds in Ms, maybe it's possible??
Upon further research it seems quite likely that an undefeated competitor through the first 3 divisions would end up in the top 15 of Makushita for their debut. If that is the case, Asahifuji would need to go 15-0 in Juryo in September and 15-0 in Juryo or Makuuchi in November. This seems a lot less likely!!!!
