Resolution criteria
This market will resolve to YES if, before January 1, 2050, a member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) serves as Chancellor of Germany, and during or as a direct result of their chancellorship, Germany experiences a systemic democratic collapse comparable to the transition of 1933.
Specifically, this transition will be defined by the occurrence of at least one of the following events before January 1, 2050:
Constitutional Suspension: The German Basic Law (Grundgesetz) is formally suspended, or a state of emergency is enacted that indefinitely suspends fundamental civil liberties (such as freedom of the press, expression, or assembly) or permits the executive to enact legislation without parliamentary approval.
Banning of Opposition: Major democratic opposition parties represented in the Bundestag (such as the SPD, CDU/CSU, or Greens) are officially banned from participating in federal elections.
Democratic Index Collapse: Germany's classification on the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Democracy Index drops to an "Authoritarian Regime" (a score below 4.00), or its score on the V-Dem Electoral Democracy Index falls below 0.40.
Precondition: If no member of the AfD (or candidate officially backed primarily by the AfD) serves as Chancellor of Germany before January 1, 2050, this market will resolve N/A.
If there is ambiguity regarding the occurrence of these events, the market will resolve based on consensus reports from major international news agencies (e.g., Reuters, Associated Press, Deutsche Welle) and international legal scholars.
Background
The Alternative for Germany (AfD), established in 2013, has grown into a prominent right-wing populist and nationalist political party. Because of extremist elements within the party, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and various state-level intelligence agencies have monitored the party, sparking intense debates in Germany regarding potential party ban proceedings under the country’s "defensive democracy" (wehrhafte Demokratie) constitutional framework.
The historical comparison to "1933" refers to the year Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of the Weimar Republic, which was swiftly followed by the Reichstag Fire Decree and the Enabling Act, dismantling democratic institutions and civil liberties. This market tracks whether a future AfD-led government would result in a similar transition to authoritarianism before 2050.
