Will I find someone to be in a reverse relationship with before I find someone to be in a real relationship with?

A reverse relationship is a relationship that starts from the end and ends at the beginning.

By flipping the conventional relationship script, a reverse relationship could look something like this:

  • Move in together

  • (Pretend to) go through a breakup

  • Work through some conflicts together

  • Have a nice and exciting relationship

  • (Pretend to) know each other less and less as time goes on. Act less familiarly.

  • Move out

  • Go on a few dinner dates

  • See each other on the street

Resolves YES if I (and someone else) consider ourselves reverse partners before I (and someone else) consider ourselves (normal) partners.

If I find neither a reverse nor normal partner by EOY 2025, I plan to resolve N/A.

This sounds absolutely fascinating! How can I learn more about this? Google searches aren’t coming up with anything.

@oh That's because (as far as I can tell) I came up with the idea!

@Alana Why would someone choose to do this? How would you make it feel genuine and not near-theatrical? How would that work with forming relationships with the partner’s social network?

@Alana How would you get information about the other person at the start? How would you be familiar with all their needs, moods, and quirks?

@Alana Did you just finish watching The Last Five Years?

@oh

It feels whimsical and fascinating to me. I really want to know what it would feel like.

You'd probably have to do it with someone you feel some attraction to. But I think acting out romantic attachment does build it!

I also feel like it'd just be an amazing way to get to know someone. Three months of reverse dating might just be better than three months of forward dating!

You probably want to tell each other about yourself before you start, but it could also be a fun experiment to not do that.

I haven't heard of "The Last of Five Years".

@Alana [deleted cuz I misunderstood]

@Alana Why would you want to have a relationship limited to a predetermined length of time?

@oh It's just a logistical thing! If you start from the end, it's hard to extend the relationship.

I can see myself forward-dating someone if I liked reverse-dating them though, and we'd have had such a unique experience to bond us!

@Alana How would it work with forming relationships with the partner’s social network?

@oh It might not be possible to do this perfectly in reverse. (It depends on how cool the partner's friends are, maybe they're willing to play along :) )

It doesn't seem blocking either way.
