Japan's Diet enacted a revision of the Imperial House Law on July 17, 2026, the first substantive change since 1947. It lets female imperial members keep their status after marrying commoners, and it allows the imperial family to adopt male-line descendants of the 11 former imperial branches, whose male-line descendants become eligible to succeed to the throne. That is a change to Japan's imperial succession law, it is the outcome of the succession debate this market links to, and it happened after the market was created.
