Twitter and Facebook are still usable... but it's not controversial to say the bots and AI slop generators are winning the war. I'm skeptical that captchas will serve as a defense for much longer, and I haven't found a clear answer on whether other ways of tamping down on bot activity (ie, monitoring traffic) will be effective in the near future. I'm left wondering if anywhere in the internet will be safe.

I'll be looking at the following criteria to determine if a site has been "conquered by bots". Two or more of these will be necessary for a resolution of Yes.

  • Trustworthy measures showing that bot traffic has begun to dwarf human traffic

  • Administrative action that there is a bot problem

  • Widespread agreement of the bot problem

  • I can log on and immediately be confronted by obvious bot content

By these measures I would consider Facebook and Twitter to already meet the criteria for Yes. I can of course envision a future where your standard AI agent has passed the shitposting turning test and is indistinguishable from a human... making all of these criteria hard to measure. However, I'm assuming there will be a period like what were seeing on Facebook where it's obvious to many what's AI and what's not.

I have no expertise in this area, and would love feedback on my criteria or any other thoughts on this issue. I'm very curious about this, and don't know what I don't know... and really want to know. I will not be betting in this market as usual, and if I am convinced to move the goalposts, I'll make sure to be transparent.
