Resolution criteria
Resolve YES if, by 11:59 pm Pacific Time on December 31, 2025, OpenAI publicly releases a standalone, OpenAI‑branded web browser (desktop or mobile) that:
lets users navigate to arbitrary URLs via an address/URL bar,
renders web pages within the app (i.e., includes an embedded browser engine such as WebKit/Chromium),
is available for general download in any country without invite/waitlist, and is either (a) announced on OpenAI’s official site or (b) listed in an official app store with OpenAI (e.g., “OpenAI, L.L.C.” / “OpenAI OpCo L.L.C.”) as the developer of record. Verification sources: OpenAI News and product pages; Apple App Store/Google Play listings by OpenAI. (openai.com)
The following do NOT count: ChatGPT Search; Deep Research (including its “visual browser” inside ChatGPT); browser extensions or default‑search integrations; features embedded in third‑party browsers (e.g., Chrome/Edge/Safari); the ChatGPT desktop apps. (help.openai.com)
Resolve NO if no qualifying browser is launched by the deadline.
Background
OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Search (prototype in 2024; available to everyone by Feb 5, 2025) and maintains a Chrome extension to set ChatGPT as default search—these are search features, not a standalone browser. (openai.com)
On Feb 2, 2025, OpenAI launched Deep Research; on Jul 17, 2025 it gained access to a “visual browser” inside the agent—still within ChatGPT, not a separate web browser product. (openai.com)
OpenAI offers desktop apps for macOS and Windows; these apps can “search the web” but are not themselves browsers. (openai.com)
Considerations
Co‑branded or forked Chromium/WebKit builds count only if OpenAI is the publisher (developer of record) and the app is positioned as a web browser. App‑store listings under OpenAI’s developer account are acceptable evidence. (apps.apple.com)
Region‑limited public releases (any country) qualify; invite‑only alphas, enterprise‑only distributions, or waitlists do not. Verification should rely on OpenAI’s News/product pages or official store listings. (openai.com)
