AI and chip stocks sold off hard in the week of 12–16 October 2026, and the Nasdaq had its worst week since June. On 15 October a rumour spread on X that the AI-focused hedge fund VARA (Value Aligned Research Advisors) had blown up. As of creation (17 October) no major outlet has confirmed it and the fund hasn't commented; one unnamed source has said the fund is fine (Bloomingbit).

Other names come up in the same conversations, but mostly because of earlier events. Situational Awareness LP sold most of its public stock portfolio to Citadel under margin pressure in July 2026 (CNBC), and Jane Street reportedly lost about $15B that month (Fortune). VARA itself fell 44% in July (Bloomberg). Events before 1 October 2026 don't count.

Resolution

Each answer resolves YES if, between 1 October and 31 December 2026, the firm confirms, or at least one of Bloomberg, the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNBC, the New York Times or The Information reports (and doesn't retract), that the fund or firm:

• is winding down, closing its main fund, or returning outside capital;

• has gated, suspended or restricted investor redemptions;

• was forced by margin calls or its prime brokers to liquidate or sell a large part of its portfolio, or needed an emergency rescue or capital injection to keep operating; or

• lost 50% or more of its capital in a single calendar month.

Otherwise it resolves NO when the market closes.

• Rumours on social media, anonymous posts, or newsletters outside the outlets above don't count on their own.

• A big drawdown alone isn't a blow-up: VARA's 44% fall in July wouldn't have counted.

• Anyone can add another fund or trading firm, and the same criteria apply.

• In genuinely ambiguous cases I'll go with the spirit of "did this fund blow up" and explain in the comments.
