Background The Gulf of Mexico is a major body of water bordered by the United States, Mexico, and Cuba. In recent years, there have been occasional proposals to rename it to "Gulf of America," though no official changes have been approved by international governing bodies or mapping authorities.
Resolution Criteria This market will resolve YES if Google Maps displays "Gulf of America" instead of "Gulf of Mexico" as the primary label for this body of water at any point before January 1, 2026. The change must be visible on the main Google Maps website (maps.google.com) and/or the official Google Maps mobile app.
The market will resolve NO if:
Google Maps continues to display "Gulf of Mexico" through December 31, 2025
Google Maps displays both names simultaneously
The change appears only in experimental features, beta versions, or regional variants
The change appears only temporarily due to a technical error
Update 2025-20-01 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): Additional Resolution Criteria:
The change to "Gulf of America" must be visible to all US users on the main Google Maps website (maps.google.com) and/or the official Google Maps mobile app, even if other regions continue to display "Gulf of Mexico."

Should manifold ban the use of the word "through" in markets, since people apparently don't know what it means? As stated, this actually means the market resolves no if google maps displays Gulf of Mexico through the entirety of the day of December 31, 2025.
@Odoacre Some of us on here, like the Maxwell may be ESL so it can be expected, please have the understanding and love in the heart for it! We are trying to do it our best!
@CryptoNeoLiberalist I am ESl myself and I get it, that's why I think manifold should flag improper uses of through instead of by. I don't really understand why through has become popular, but it should not be.

@MaxwellTabarrok which apperas to blatantly contradict the "The change appears only in experimental features, beta versions, or regional variants" right above it which is quite misleading
At an intermediate zoom level, it still says "Gulf of Mexico" for me. I flagged this as a possible ambiguity in this comment.
@Arcmage7000 can you post the link? I can’t find this on the USGS website and I’m lazy.
@JussiVilleHeiskanen @NicoDelon link here https://edits.nationalmap.gov/apps/gaz-domestic/public/search/names
the map still says mexico, yep, but the key point is the data base has changed - you’ll see no mention of gulf of mexico if you use the search feature. this data base is what google uses for naming, so it’s just a question of timing for google to update at this point
@BlueDragon It’s not good things are heading this way, these ridiculous initiatives are being acted on and executed. 💔
@Predictor truth. Trump is choosing this hill to die on, I sure as heck would not, even or especially if I were dismantling US hegemony and democracy.
But now we can pay attention to real stuff that matters.
