Resolution criteria
This market resolves to Yes if, between January 1, 2027, and December 31, 2027 (inclusive, UTC), regular military forces of the Russian Federation conduct a hostile military invasion of Greece's sovereign land territory. Otherwise, this market resolves to No.
For the purposes of this market, an "invasion" is defined as the unauthorized entry of Russian armed forces (ground, naval, or airborne troops) onto sovereign Greek land territory with hostile intent, as reported by a consensus of major international news outlets (e.g., Reuters, Associated Press, or BBC News).
Edge Cases and Exclusions:
Stray missiles, downed drones, or brief airspace/maritime border incursions do not count as an invasion unless accompanied by a sustained deployment of Russian military personnel or an ongoing military occupation of Greek soil.
Cyberattacks, economic blockades, diplomatic expulsions, or hybrid sabotage operations that do not involve regular Russian military personnel physically entering Greek territory will not qualify.
Background
Greece has been a member of NATO since 1952 and the European Union since 1981. Historically, Greece and Russia maintained warm cultural, religious, and economic ties. However, bilateral relations deteriorated sharply following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Athens has since aligned closely with its Western allies, implementing EU sanctions and providing military support to Ukraine.
While some Western military intelligence reports and Baltic officials have warned that Russia could rebuild its combat readiness to confront European or NATO members as early as 2027, an outright military invasion of Greece remains highly speculative due to Greece's geographic separation from Russia and the mutual defense commitments of NATO's Article 5.
