Resolved
NO

Will the puzzle solution to this market be a word in any common human language? Proper nouns don't count. inspired by commenter @ItsMe :

It'd be a lot smarter if you guys just agreed to go through the dictionary.

  • Update 2025-11-14 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): If the puzzle is not solved and the dictionary hasn't been exhausted and Ben doesn't reveal the answer, the market will resolve N/A.

Google "benko" japanese word

It isn't super common....but it is a non proper noun in Japanese. And Japanese is undoubtedly a common language.

Now, is it the definition Ben intended? Absolutely not. But the terms of the market should control.

@MRME hmmmm

@Bayesian It is obscure. Maybe even archaic. But your terms don't say it has to be a COMMON word or even regularly used.

@MRME Funny, but the transcription may be incorrect and may not actually refer to surname Benko.

A foreign surname like Benko would more likely be transliterated, for example as 本可 or 本科, though such forms are uncommon and not standard surnames in Chinese.

In Japanese, a clay pot used to collect feces in an outhouse (a night-soil container) is most commonly called:

  • 便壺(べんつぼ, ben-tsubo)
    → literally “toilet pot / excrement jar”; this fits a portable or container-style vessel, including clay pots. (chatGPT)

@MyDreamIsHere2018 oh I'm going more obscure than that. A surname wouldn't qualify as it would be a proper noun. Archaic Japanese. That's my position lol.

@MRME It is not a common noun and does not have a general dictionary meaning like table or river. Its meaning is “the family name Benko.”

@MyDreamIsHere2018 "Yes — 便壺 can be read as べんこ (benko), and dictionary entries confirm that reading exists as a variant alongside the more usual べんつぼ (bentsubo) for a clay pot or chamber pot used to collect feces."

@MyDreamIsHere2018 it doesn't have to be a COMMON noun. Just a noun in a common LANGUAGE.

@MRME Ben's answer is clearly not a Japanese 便壺

@MyDreamIsHere2018 Ben's answer doesn't have to be Japanese. Just so long as the word exists in a common language and is a noun, verb, etc... (not a proper noun)

@MRME 便壺 ? let's ask Ben if the puzzle's answer is 便壺

@MyDreamIsHere2018 ask Ben if he would have accepted the English language version "benko" all lower case assuming I meant a chamber pot

@MRME sorry nice argument but this goes against the intent of the market

@Bayesian not going to let me win on a technicality huh? Darn. Fair enough.

@MRME sometimes chess players really need it to be under the table, sure

@MRME For what it's worth, I think you are good at making arguments. I can appreciate the art.

@Quroe Maybe they should be required to pay for disputes. It can be very disruptive and unsettling for market creators who have less confidence in their ability to manage a market.

@Quroe It's worth 50 of your mana

lol don't worry I promise most of my bets are on more solid footing but I liked the odds here.

@Eliza Is there still a niche for a Manifold courtroom drama TV show?

@Eliza yeah I wouldn't have pushed this hard on a newbie. Not the right kind of environment. I know @Bayesian doesn't take it personally and probably secretly respects the push.

To be clear, I mean no disrespect. I still do think I'm technically correct but I'm not going to raise a fuss or ask for a re-resolution here - this is solidly in Bayesian's territory to rule on.

Sorry if I came across like a jerk - just trying to advocate for my side here; nothing personal.

@Eliza fully support the idea of disputes - we need it on Manifold - at least nominally

@Quroe
0.00022 shares purchased. Deserved!

@MRME An excellent use of free will.

@MRME you're fine!

the only things i dislike are

  1. people lying for the sake of appearing to have a stronger argument,

  1. people being disrespectful to the market creator,

  2. markets not being closed when some ambiguity is pointed out, letting ppl deliberate while the market is open, and the "debate" never ending, ppl being always incentivized to yap more to be the last person to have a word in to influence the market creator. unpleasant and time consuming

^ "the only things i dislike" is an overstatement, more like the things that come to mind rn

@Bayesian +1 markets not being closed when some ambiguity is pointed out, letting ppl deliberate while the market is open, and the "debate" never ending, ppl being always incentivized to yap more to be the last person to have a word in to influence the market creator. unpleasant and time consuming - https://manifold.markets/AffineTyped/gemini-3-google-release-no-double-s
