I've been watching a lot of movies lately, I guess. Our local film festival org has two cinemas a short walk from my home. They have another cinema downtown, which is a little further but still convenient. I have a membership primarily to support them and their mission, but it also means I get discounted tickets, and I occasionally volunteer and am given a free ticket for my time.
For the purpose of this market (and ease of tracking), I am counting any films I see in the cinema whether they're feature-length or shorts. Notably, my cinema curates films from around the US and internationally, and hosts a ton of themed runs (like Romanian films, Italian films, Ingmar Bergman hosted by the local Swedish Club, Noir films, etc) throughout the year. This market has little to do with whether there are [x] new films worth seeing that come out this year, as I go to a variety of things and I'm open to most genres, eras, countries of origin, etc.
I track what I watch on Letterboxd, including this list of Stuff I've Seen in the Cinema in 2025 - I'm creating this market on May 16 and that list has 53 films YTD. If a film isn't in their database (rarely, but sometimes shorts or local or student films aren't there), I go through the process to add it. You can expect everything I see to be reflected in this list.
Obviously I go most frequently to the collection of cinemas I mentioned above, but I could see anything anywhere at any time!
Recommendations welcome! Sometimes I miss good new things because I tend to overlook larger/chain cinemas but I'm not opposed.
*the 51st annual SIFF started last night and I hope to get a lot of screenings in over the next 10 days.
the film festival wrapped today and while I'm seeing a few things in the streaming run, I'm not going to clock any others in the cinema (and maybe I should take a little break - I saw 27 films there including the two I signed an NDA for and am not allowed to post about yet)
there's at least one option in this market that's mispriced lol
