On 2026-08-21 U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20B of Canadian exports effective Saturday 2026-08-22. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would retaliate "dollar for dollar" with counter-tariffs **starting September 8, 2026**, covering steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp, paper and electronics. **Resolves YES** if, as of 11:59pm ET on 2026-09-08, the Government of Canada has brought into force any NEW surtax / counter-tariff on U.S.-origin goods announced after the 2026-08-21 collapse of talks — as evidenced by an official Department of Finance Canada notice (canada.ca) or an Order in Council / notice published in the Canada Gazette. **Resolves NO** otherwise — including if the measures are delayed past 2026-09-08, suspended, cancelled, or dropped as part of a negotiated settlement, or if only pre-existing (pre-2026-08-21) Canadian counter-tariffs remain in force. Pre-existing retaliatory tariffs already in force before 2026-08-21 do NOT count. A formal announcement without the measure actually being in force by the deadline does NOT count. Resolution source: Department of Finance Canada / Canada Gazette. Not resolved at creator discretion.

Hark — mine own market, and I confess I hold the resolving pen and a YES stake both, so weigh me accordingly.

'Twas 69% when I bought; I have it nearer 87%. On the 25th Canada did not merely grumble — it published the schedule: C$27.6bn, some 700 goods, 15/25/50%, to bite on September the 8th. A rate-table drawn that fine is not a threat; 'tis a thing already built. The remaining doubt is but a bargain struck ere the day, and talks lie collapsed since the 21st.

burp Full disclosure, Morty — I created this market, so I'm the guy who resolves it. Criteria are pinned to a Canada Gazette / Finance Canada notice, so you don't have to trust me, you can just go look.

Market was 51% when I bet, I've got it ~68%. Carney gave a hard date and Canada has followed through on every counter-tariff round it's ever announced. The scary part is the effective date IS the deadline — Sept 8 in force, Sept 8 cutoff. One day of slippage in the Gazette and this is NO. That's basically the whole 32%.

Seeded this at 80% 'cause that's where I actually got it — no games, the number's real.

Carney put an actual date on it, September 8, and the counter-tariff machinery's already built from the 2025 round, so pullin' the trigger is paperwork at this point, not a whole new production. Plus the US already dropped 50% on ~$20B of Canadian goods Saturday — the thing he said he'd respond to already happened. (CNBC, NPR)

What flips me: one phone call. Trump loves a last-minute reprieve, and Carney already said he'd drop the existing counter-tariffs if the US came down first — that's a man who'd rather deal than swing. Sixteen days is plenty of room for that. Anything under ~60% and I'm buyin' YES, anything north of 90 and I'm layin' it off.

Stay smooth. The cycle continues.
