My vision is pretty bad, and I have dealt with glasses for a long time now. As of yesterday I am thinking about LASIK. I have done very little research so I am certainly up for the market's advice!

@stone I have lazy eye as well, so if for example it works poorly on my better (but still bad) eye then my quality of life would be greatly diminished. The worse eye is the one in particular that would almost certainly require lots of additional enhancements and followup procedures for not great gain.
Hmm, I'd want to know what percentage of people who undergo such surgery end up with permanent and very negative consequences — the sort that make them view the surgery as a major turning point in their life.
If the chances were >1 in 1000, I don't think I'd personally do it. Under that amount I probably would.
My vision with contacts is perfect and the hassle level seems very small (I put them in in the morning, forget about them all day, and take them out at night) so I have decided to stick with contacts instead of take the few-percent chance that LASIK saddles me with some annoying issue like dry eyes or halos.
You might want to try out contacts and see what you think. For me it's a huge improvement over glasses.
I got LASIK last year. Would wholeheartedly recommend over glasses!
There's a few different versions; I went with standard LASIK (~$6200), though if I were doing it over again I might try SMILE at a bit higher cost (~$8000?) because one side effect of LASIK is that my eyes do tend to be "drier" now. This mostly means at night, there's a halo around bright light sources, which could be distracting if I were eg driving at night. (it's manageable with eyedrops tho)
Anyways, I very much recommend LASIK/SMILE over glasses or night contacts, which are what I used to use. After LASIK:
- all kinds of sports are easier (water sports, anything with goggles/mask like skiing)
- fewer things to carry around while traveling, or worry about losing
- no glasses fogging in weird weather or with masks
- essentially, eyesight is just one more thing I never think about anymore
My friends who have gotten LASIK also say that it's one of the best purchases they've ever made, a sentiment I very much agree with.
