@evergreenemily Something like visualization would be an apt word, i think
Vision and mental rehearsal are two sides of the same coin. “You must program your internal viewfinder,” says Bowman. He’s speaking of visualization and no one, in Bowman’s opinion, does it better than Michael Phelps. “For months before a race Michael gets into a relaxed state. He mentally rehearses for two hours a day in the pool. He sees himself winning. He smells the air, tastes the water, hears the sounds, sees the clock.” Phelps take visualization one step further. He sees himself from the outside, as a spectator in the stands. He sees himself overcoming obstacles, too. For example, what would he do if he fell further behind in a race than he intended? Phelps practices all potential scenarios.
@firstuserhere It's kinda like that, yeah! I'd personally say "visualization" in serious scenarios, and "manifesting this" in silly ones.
(Visualization does really work, or at least help. Not in the sense of the mind affecting real-world outcomes directly, but in the sense that the more confident you are in something, the easier it is to do it. I've been psyching myself up for my first lab TA session by visualizing myself doing lab TA things, and it's helped a lot with my anxiety to just imagine myself doing well.)
@evergreenemily The people who seriously believe in manifesting see it as something different. It's when you believe in something strongly enough that your belief causes it to come true. It's basically an atheist form of prayer, except that you don't need god's help, you have some hidden superpowers that allow you to do that yourself.
