Pope Francis doesn't seem to go heavy with excommunications. It probably makes more sense for him to try to influence him from within the church in a modern political climate.

@MingCat it took Vigano accusing the pope of an affair at seminary and calling his papacy out in very explicicite terms for a case of schism to be brought upon a bishop. The threshold for a lay person would probably be very high. That said not sure if Vance has prominent backers in the RC hierarchy
