The Societal Trolley is heading towards two problems in society. The problem they run over is magically erased from the current world. People know it existed, but none of them will miss it and nothing like it will ever come into existence again.

The next time my friends are drunk and bored I am going to show them this market, and ask them to choose if they would run over the things on the left track (NO resolution) or the right track (YES resolution). Each option resolves based on a majority vote of the friends who give an answer. I will break any ties myself.

You can submit any trolley problems you think would be fun for this. If people trade on your trolley problem, you'll get trader bonuses/fees! You should try to submit options that are tough to decide on, as this will probably get you more traders. I reserve the right to N/A answers for quality control.

I may also show my friends arguments from the comments that you have about why they should run over the left track or right track. If it helps, you can decently model my friends' political/philosophical opinions as those typical reddit user with a sprinkling of leftism and transhumanism. You can also try to predict their opinions from the markets I made about our TV and Movie viewing preferences.

The most common time for me to have my friends all in one place and drunk is Saturday nights, but I'll keep extending the close date as long as I think this is a fun idea.

Left Track: Death by Aging (NO) - Right Track: Death by Disease (YES)
bought Ṁ5 Left Track: Death by... NO

many more ppl die from aging than from disease. Without aging, the life expectancy goes really, really high, despite disease. without disease, life expectancy stays limited by aging

@Bayesian Almost nobody would die young anymore though without disease, almost everyone would get to live a full life

@TheAllMemeingEye so lower variance, lower total ev, but better median? sure.
Counterpoint, if nobody ages beyond 30 years old, the yearly health risk of a 30 yearold is approx 100 deaths per year per 100k ppl, so you would live approximately 1000 years on average, before a disease or accident killed you. and presumably within that society, there would be measures for that to happen less

Left Track: Global poverty (NO) - Right Track: A 50% cut to their disposable income (YES)
bought Ṁ10 Left Track: Global p... NO

Why would they run over their own income??

bought Ṁ10 Left Track: Unjust W... NO

@Joshua maybe they really, really like global poverty

bought Ṁ2 Left Track: Global p... YES

@Joshua Lmao yeah I need to reword it sorry

Left Track: Religion (NO) - Right Track: Opioids (YES)

Reasons to run over religion:

  • Extreme religious fundamentalist oppression

  • Medical opioids relieve extreme pain for those in need

  • Opioid addicts might just switch to other drugs if you run over opioids instead

Reasons to run over opioids:

  • Violent crime and overdoses caused by opioid epidemic drug war

  • The friends might be religious

  • Extreme religious fundamentalists might just switch to other oppressive secular ideologies if you run over religion instead

It's a tough one lol

@TheAllMemeingEye This is good analysis, will pass on. Personally I think I'd run over religion, but not sure about my friends.
