Resolution criteria

This market resolves to YES if, at any point before January 1, 2050 (11:59:59 PM UTC), the United States is recognized by standard political science and governance tracking indices as a totalitarian dictatorship or closed autocracy characterized by total suppression of opposition, absence of competitive national elections, and pervasive state control, comparable to historical totalitarian regimes.

Specifically, the market resolves to YES if:

1. The Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) project classifies the United States as a "Closed Autocracy" in its annual Regimes of the World dataset (viewable at v-dem.net), OR

2. Freedom House downgrades the United States to "Not Free" with a Total Score and Status of 10 or lower out of 100 on its annual Freedom in the World report (viewable at freedomhouse.org), OR

3. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) classifies the United States as an "Authoritarian regime" with an overall Democracy Index score of 2.00 or lower out of 10.00 (viewable at eiu.com).

If none of these conditions are met by December 31, 2049, or if the United States ceases to exist as a unified sovereign nation before meeting these criteria, this market resolves to NO.

Note for the creator: Because comparing a modern regime directly to Nazi-era totalitarianism involves qualitative judgment, established empirical autocracy metrics are specified above as objective benchmarks. The creator may adjust specific thresholds or indices prior to substantial trading.

Background

Comparative political scientists categorize regimes using structural datasets such as V-Dem, Freedom House, and the EIU Democracy Index. Under V-Dem's Regimes of the World framework, a "Closed Autocracy" requires the chief executive to be selected without multi-party competition and the near-total absence of institutional electoral constraints. Historical totalitarian models (such as Nazi Germany or Stalinist USSR) represent extreme ends of closed autocracies, featuring single-party monopolies, state terror, ideological conformity, and total suppression of independent civil society.
