Resolution Criteria

This market resolves to YES if the English Wikipedia article currently titled "Gulf of Mexico" is officially renamed to any other title before January 1, 2026. The market resolves to NO if the article title remains "Gulf of Mexico" through January 1, 2026. Technical moves that temporarily change the title but revert back to "Gulf of Mexico" within 24 hours do not count as a title change.

Considerations

  • Title changes on Wikipedia typically occur when there are significant shifts in how terms are used in reliable sources or when compelling reasons emerge that align with Wikipedia's naming policies

  • The process requires community consensus through formal discussion

  • The current decision is not to change the name to “Gulf of America” despite the January 2025 executive order to change the name in the United States

  • Vandalism or unauthorized changes that are quickly reverted do not count as official title changes

One of the most obvious cases of Wikipedia bias. How is the US Government recognizing it as Gulf of America not notable enough to at least add it as an alternative name at the beginning of the article? There's some articles that have like 10 alternate names at the beginning lmao, petty editors.
