@Conflux But you are correct that he wouldn't have enough time to do anything. In fact, it might not even be sworn in until just before the new year.
@Conflux It is definitely the most powerful person in the US in terms of their impact on the lives of Americans. The president is much more powerful on a global scale because that is the executive branch responsibility, but Nancy Pelosi is the most powerful American politician. All spending bills must originate in the House and the Speaker has absolute control over debate in the House, it is not shared with the minority like in the Senate, so not one cent can be spent by the US government without the Speaker's approval.
@BTE True. Isn’t that pretty late in the year, though? Not much time to do stuff after becoming speaker.
@Conflux He can't really stand out until election day really because he is just the minority leader. If he becomes speaker he will be the most powerful person in America.
@Conflux If GOP sweeps congress and Kevin McCarthy is Speaker he is a pretty good bet. That has been the case when such a flip took place in the past. And since he would be the obvious choice, I could see (and would encourage) them going with the Jan 6 Commission, depending on whether or not they continue to deliver the goods.
