Will I declare any plant-based animal-imitating product newly "there" before the end of 2023?

I currently think vegan mayonnaise is "there", in the sense that I'm not aware of any situation in which I would instead purchase normal mayonnaise for culinary reasons (though I might if I was accommodating another person's allergy, availability was limited, I was on a budget, etc.) Fake chicken nuggets (specifically - not any other application of chicken) also attained this status more recently. I am aware of several plant-based imitative products which I consider good and enjoy eating but not "there" (Beyond sausage, Impossible ground "beef", the weird cylindrical Quorn roast). I don't eat the animal versions, but that doesn't mean the substitutes are fully compensating for that in all respects. All dairy substitute products I have tried are deeply inadequate and Just egg tasted weird (I do still consume dairy and egg, and also fish). This market resolves to YES if I determine that any plant-based imitative product other than veganaise is a completely adequate substitute for its non-vegan counterpart before the end of the year. This can be very specific ("vanilla ice cream", "hard salami") as long as it's something I have enough use for to evaluate. I am known to have unusually high standards for food. I didn't like Brave Robot ice cream. But the field's advancing fast! Apr 14, 8:17pm: *other than veganaise or chicken nuggets Close date updated to 2023-12-21 11:59 pm

So, what do you declare?

predictedNO

@NicoDelon Thanks for the nudge XD

predictedNO

@Alicorn Happy new year. Let’s hope 2024 marks the arrival of some newly there thing!

predictedNO

Are you planning on trying anything new for the holidays?

predictedNO

@NicoDelon Not especially!

predictedNO

Any updates?

predictedNO

@NicoDelon I haven't spotted many of the recommendations at the store, which I guess is an implicit limitation on things being declared "there" too. I think the oat ice cream came by far the closest but it's just fine ice cream, not top of the line, so it doesn't quite make the cut.

predictedNO

@Alicorn I fear we’ve reached a state of stagnation in the space. Exciting new options are popping up at a much slower pace than even a few years ago. And inflation is not helping. Nor are virtually stagnating plant based meat sales or the relatively bearish expectations regarding cultured meat.

Have you tried the Naturli fake spreadable butter? (not the block, which is more of a baking thing) To me, it is as flavoursome as butter on bread/toast, whereas other plant spreads are flavourless or weird. Given your comment about Kerrygold, it's a long shot but I'm curious to know. https://www.naturli-foods.us/

predictedNO

@fwbt I'll keep an eye out, I haven't tried it.

predictedYES

@Alicorn Actually, any chance Earth Balance qualifies?

predictedNO

@Conflux I haven't tried that either. Maybe, but I'd be surprised.

predictedYES

@Alicorn Oh wow! My (non-veg) family has enjoyed it for years. I personally find it strictly better than butter (or pretty close to that - it doesn’t taste exactly the same though)

predictedYES

@fwbt Naturli is so good, I used to love butter but I firmly believe this to taste better as a spread. (for cooking it's not amazing since the tasteless shea butter gets separated. Plus it has a lot of water in it)

predictedNO

@Conflux Earth balance is overrated IMO, I'd rather have the cheap margarine (but I have cheap tastes in general). I haven't seen or tried Naturil.

Try Nocciollata, it's basically vegan Nutella

predictedNO

@Shump I don't like hazelnuts.

predictedYES

Have you tried Ben and Jerries vegan icecream? Some flavours are not great but others really work, e.g. phish food (which is itself a fake form of fish).

predictedNO

@Ramble I haven't, though if some of the flavors aren't great then probably the base vegan ice cream phenomenon isn't going to cut it no matter how convincingly phishy their chocolate is.

@Alicorn I second vegan ice cream. Good vegan ice cream is almost indistinguishable in quality from the cow milk version. Which also makes a lot of sense because plant milks don't taste significantly worse. Ben & Jerry's is good as far as ice cream that you can buy in a supermarket goes, but I would also recommend Van Leeuwen's, their plant-based stuff is of similar quality.

predictedNO

@Shump I have had Oatly ice cream that tasted like solidly decent ice cream. But to pass this particular bar it has to be culinarily strictly equal or superior to an animal product I might wish to eat, and it wasn't better than Haagen-Dazs. (which, of course, itself is better than most cow ice cream!) Still, I've been very favorably impressed with Van Leeuwen's before and they might have a particular flavor available that I cannot strictly beat with a cow version, so I'll keep my eyes peeled when I'm next at the store (which might be some time, as my means of transport recently self-destructed).

predictedYES

@Alicorn Circling back on this – I think B&J vegan icecream is quite a lot better than Oatly (too much oat taste + freezes easily, IMO). Well worth trying!

This is a great idea! Here are some of my favorites in no particular order. Have you tried any already?

Miyokos cream cheese and their other cheese spreads

Miyokos liquid mozzarella - crucial to follow their baking directions. This is the only one I've had that's remotely like real cheese on pizza or lasagna

Tofutti ricotta - I only use this as an ingredient. Not sure if it would be identical if eaten straight, but I can't tell the difference in things.

Country Crock butter sticks

Violife butter

Miyokos butter - not the oat milk kind

Cacique soy chorizo

Lidl vemondo "vegan hazelnut cocoa spread" nutella clone - I can't tell the difference from cow nutella

Breakfast sausage patties - several brands are as good as animal meat

Field roast sausages

Vegan fish sticks - some are indistinguishable to me

SO Delicious cashew ice cream - I like this better than cow ice cream. It's almost the same and doesn't leave me missing anything. Best ice cream I've ever had. Bars are great, too.

Reese's plant based

Go Max Go candy bars

VGAN chocolate - only good milk chocolate I've tried. Not a huge fan of any kind of milk chocolate to start with, though.

Dandies marshmallows - if you eat these raw, the texture is slightly different, but I wouldn't say better or worse. Once roasted, indistinguishable. They'll sell fluff in a jar soon.

Orrington Farms chicken and beef flavor broth base

Chef Woo ramen - indistinguishable from other cheap brands' chicken/beef flavor

Chao frozen mac and cheese - divisive, but I like it

Mellody honey - I haven't actually tried it because it's so expensive, but it has great reviews

Not Milk - The cowiest vegan milk I've had by far but still definitely different. Probably won't pass your test, but I think it's worth a try.

@TylerMurphy I enjoy Beyond breakfast sausages but do not think they are "there". I'll keep an eye out for the others in applications that I'm interested in (but my Kerrygold standard for butter may hamper those entrants...). I don't think honey or marshmallows are quite within the spirit of my question, though.

predictedYES

@Alicorn I like Simple Truth and the Wegmans store brand and Impossible better than Beyond for breakfast sausage patties.

predictedNO

@TylerMurphy Impossible tastes great (though not "there") but I have developed a weird gut-level aversion to eating it too often, which I'm assuming reflects some subtle nutritional feature. No Weggies on this coast and I don't think I've spotted Simple Truth either.
