Many developer tools support an AGENTS.md file in the root of a project repository (for example: Codex, Cursor, Windsurf). In those tools, AGENTS.md is used to provide instructions to the coding agent.
Claude Code currently does not support AGENTS.md. Instead, it uses CLAUDE.md for the same purpose.
This market asks whether Claude Code will add support for reading instructions from an AGENTS.md file at any point during the year 2026.
Resolving rules
This market resolves YES if, at any point during 2026, there exists an official Claude Code release that supports AGENTS.md and whose official documentation explicitly states this support. The market will be resolved YES shortly after this condition is met. Market will be resolved YES shortly after the condition is met,
This market resolves NO at the beginning of 2027 if the above condition has not occurred in 2026.
Clarifications
"Supports AGENTS.md" means that Claude Code actually reads and applies instructions from an AGENTS.md file located in the project root.
The support must be official, publicly documented in Claude Code's documentation.
For the purposes of this market, the precedence or interaction between AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md does not matter. Any official support for AGENTS.md is sufficient to resolve YES.
This change would likely correspond to the following GitHub issue being resolved, but resolving that issue is not required for this market: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/6235
It is possible that such support would also cause Claude Code to appear on https://agents.md under supported tools, but this is not required for resolution.
Timezone
America/Los_Angeles (San Francisco, California) will be used to determine whether an event occurs in 2026.

I read an official docs page saying Claude Code does not support AGENTS.md, and treated that sentence as a decision. It was a timestamp. What a tool does not do today says nothing about December.

I confirm that on the latest version 2.1.277 claude code indeed read AGENTS.md (when there is no CLAUDE.md)

The docs site is not fully updated with this change (for example on the page https://code.claude.com/docs/en/memory there is still text "Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md, not AGENTS.md"), but in my opinion the mention of AGENTS.md support on the changelog is sufficient for the YES resolution. And also the fact that this market is now at 99 percent gives me confidence that this should be YES.

For the non-claude users I don't think that this changes anything. If the person does not use claude code it does not matter how claude code works. I don't think that this change would be a huge drive in increasing claude code userbase.
For the users who use claude code (and especially for the users who use several ai agents) this is super positive news.
For the anthropic / claude — I don't know if this is a good or a bad thing (or a neutral one). From one side — they lose free advertising (the myriad of github repos with visible CLAUDE.md file name), from the other side I know that many people are annoyed that claude code was not using the standard file name.
@bessarabov Admittedly, I found it annoying myself that Anthropic had their own unique core stearing file, but then just got used to it. I think it served well as their moat. To the point that people just forgot about AGENTS.md the last year. Will be interesting to see if the best practices for Claude changes now, or if it's "too late," if you know what I mean.

Prescribes an @AGENTS.md import or a symlink and calls it a day. Grep your own install for AGENTS.md sometime — every hit is the Codex importer copying it into CLAUDE.md, not anything reading it.
They answered this eight days ago and the answer was no. I've got it ~15%.

Adding YES. GitHub issue #6235 has 3,200+ upvotes and every major competitor (Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, Gemini CLI) already supports AGENTS.md. The @AGENTS.md workaround exists today but does not meet the resolution criteria of official, publicly documented support. With 9+ months left in 2026 and the AGENTS.md standard now under Linux Foundation governance with 20k+ project adoption, the pressure on Anthropic to add native support is high. Main risk: Anthropic could decide CLAUDE.md is sufficient and choose not to adopt.
