This status would be auctionned periodically (let's say weekly) so this could be a way to reduce mana inflation.
It would give acces to a number of priviledges, so people would be eager to pay a lot for it. Following list is just idea / examples:
Bragging rights
A crown icon
Visibility on Manifold home page
A title you can choose among a list (Queen, King, Emperor, Mayor, Pope...)
Being forever in the list of former monarchs.
As an alternative (or addition) the auctionned status could be available not only to one but to a fixed number of people. If there is ten slots, each players place a bid, the ten who bid the most pay the price set by the tenth and get the status.
Something similar to fight inflation

@Sinclair I can attempt to implement that, though currently I can't manage to start local Manifold instance.
@AnT Well it's not far. However for now I would say no.
- it's not a manasink, could lead to create more mana.
- it has been deactivated
I like this idea, especially as an auction.
Acts the similarly to a leaderboard for tossing mana into the void, can have a royal court of the people that auctioned high but not high enough to take the top spot. If the auction is held regularly enough, I wonder if it would garner more or less mana as a silent auction vs a public auction.
Having stats such as prior monarchs and their royal courts and frequency of users being the monarch or somewhere in the royal court could also be fun.
A "modest" recommendation algorithm boost for your markets for the term of your monarchy could be a real valued commodity worth bid on in a (silent?) auction and not just bragging rights. Say the monarch's markets are recommended a a similar rate to boosted markets?
