It's legal in England, but not in the rest of the UK: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_corporal_punishment_in_England_and_Wales (specifically in the case of "reasonable punishment" by a parent; it's still not legal to hit a random child, nor technically legal to hit the child you're a parent of for reasons other than punishing them if they somehow manage to prove that)
