So I called the line, and got an in-person appointment fairly quickly; at the appointment center, I got my passport back same-day.
I did have to book the appointment in Minneapolis, so I routed a flight through Minneapolis on the way to the Bahamas; but if you have about a week of notice you might be able to get an appointment closer to where you live!
