@Marnix This is an understandable concern. I think one of their big tasks early on is to demonstrate they're cutting things that everyone agrees should be cut, and only then move on to more controversial stuff.
@Shai I kind of disagree with the premise - I don't think there is anything that everyone agrees should be cut. Beyond that, though, I think they're not going to try to demonstrate this, though I'm expecting to see some "Look at the RIDICULOUS research the federal government is funding!!!" type spin on actually fairly useful research, painting it in a bad light. I'm more expecting them to heavily target the organizations that are trying to make big companies bend to pro-worker / pro-environment / pro-general-public regulation, like the NLRB, the SEC, OSHA, the FTC, the National Highway Traffic Safety administration, and the FAA.
@Marnix This is a really alien view to me, I just assumed everyone agrees that there is plenty of rent seeking and blatant corruption in any government.
@Shai The government does an insane amount to protect you from large corps. Think about forever chemicals. You don't want forever chemicals in your drinking water. Remember when twitter broke after Elon took it over. It'll be like that except with your drinking water. Have you done a comparative analysis of countries with stringent regulations and those without? Intuition isn't helpful if you have no idea what the government does.
@JosephMoore "There are some very good regulations" is not a serious argument against reducing regulations.
@Shai Reducing regulation is a very touchy issue because it usually requires either a lot expertise or a lot of time to tell whether it's a good or bad idea. But that's not the point here. The main point is not "we don't want people removing regulation", it's "we specifically do not want the Rich Guy™️, who has a personal financial interest in removing anti-monopoly and consumer-protection regulations, to be in charge of removing regulation."
Overall, I hope he succeeds. But I have the same reservations as Jennifer Pahlka: https://open.substack.com/pub/eatingpolicy/p/is-there-a-path-to-responsible-disruption
@TimothyJohnson5c16 Love this article. "Yes, we do overspend ridiculously on the military and many bullsh*t jobs, but also, Musk is not the answer and he'll have the effectiveness of a thanos snap"
Needs options for "unsure", "depends on who he fires", "lizardman", and "see results"
@Shai Lol sorry I forgot about that, looking back though I would still say there's a big difference between any of my suggestions and "don't care"
