Rough reasoning is that Matt bought Tumblr for personal reasons but it has never been profitable, and with Matt out of the picture it doesn't make much sense to keep shoveling money into this particular pit.
@wasabipesto Note this comes after a few failed monetization attempts (Tumblr Live, Midjourney/OpenAI data licensing, Post+, Tips), a failed wordpress rewrite/migration, and firing the majority of the Tumblr development staff to put the site in maintenance mode.
