Will the Nintendo Switch 2 be softmodded before 2035? [read description]
58%
chance

Resolves YES if there exists a publicly available, usable by hobbyists, softmod for the Nintendo Switch 2 before market close. An unreleased or one-off hack doesn't count.

Any OS version, game, etc counts as long as it was ever publicly available at some point.

"soft" - Does not require nontrivial disassembly of the console, does not require specialist tools or devices (including flashcarts), and does not require permanent physical alterations to the console. For example, something like the fusee-gelee vulnerability would count because it can be accomplished without disassembly, with everyday hardware (you can use a paperclip or something instead of a jig), and does not require a permanent hardware modification.

"mod" - Must be able to run nontrivial homebrew code. For example, running a Doom port would be sufficient. Running as javascript or wasm within the web browser doesn't count, it must involve arbitrary native code execution.

i feel like these are gonna get way rarer as everyone focuses more on memory safety but i have no idea what specific probability to put on it

bought แน€100 NO

@Robincvgr interesting question. I put the probability around 30% but I'm not sure I want to lock my mana up on it long-term

@Robincvgr I wonder if they're writing any part of the system in a language like rust, but yeah stuff like MTE is gonna be a big help for them

@retr0id re: memory safety, basically all software components of the switch 2 are written in memory-unsafe languages. the system's security as a whole comes from its architecture

@MartinSundhaug switch 2 does not have MTE

@retr0id Yeah I think I was confusing MTE and PAC
