Will Meta release its generative AI as a consumer product in 2023?

Meta has talked about its AI efforts and released a large-language model, though not to the general public. Will it release a ChatGPT-like general-purpose chatbot to end users in 2023, either as a standalone product or integrated in Facebook or WhatsApp?

It has to be accessible by anyone without any technical knowledge (so e.g. APIs don't count), directly (so it doesn't count if another company uses it, like Microsoft does with its Bing Chat which is powered by OpenAI), and not be limited to any specific topic/use case.

I'm sure there will be other edge cases and angles I haven't thought of; feel free to ask.

As I mentioned previously in a comment, I still don't know how to resolve this one. I cannot access the chatbot, but that might be because I'm outside the US. I have see the Meta announcements back in September, and plenty of reports about the announcement, but no information on whether the chatbot is indeed available to all, at least in the US.

I would appreciate it if anyone could point me to more information on this.

predicted YES

@PS Id ask others to weigh in on chat or availability.

Here is an internal help page on how to interact with the Meta AI chat bot. https://help.instagram.com/2050445508681504/?cms_platform=android-app&helpref=platform_switcher

Since I still haven't found the information needed to resolve, I'll try again in a week. If nobody can point me to relevant info until then, and I can't find anything myself, I will resolve N/A.

predicted NO

@firstuserhere Despite the title, this market is about chatbots only.

@firstuserhere @MetaAI is available as a chatbot in whatsapp

in fact, you can call it inside a DM with another person i.e. in a chat between A and B, you can do @MetaAI to get genAI results mid-chat

@firstuserhere Yes, discussion that started just today of this below. Is it out of beta, can anyone use it? We're not sure if that matters, and I've pinged @PS to request clarification.

Meta did release a series of chat bots in September: https://about.fb.com/news/2023/09/introducing-ai-powered-assistants-characters-and-creative-tools/amp/

This includes Meta AI

“Meta AI is a new assistant you can interact with like a person, available on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, …. It’s powered by a custom model that leverages technology from Llama 2 and our latest large language model (LLM) research. In text-based chats, Meta AI has access to real-time information through our search partnership with Bing and offers a tool for image generation ”

This seems to satisfy the fine print of this question?

@GeoffBeamish I just sold some NO but I'm not sure.

@PS could you clarify? This is a "beta" release, but is a chatbot and not API-only access.

  • We’re introducing Meta AI in beta, an advanced conversational assistant that’s available on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, and is coming to Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and Quest 3. Meta AI can give you real-time information and generate photorealistic images from your text prompts in seconds to share with friends. (Available in the US only)

I'm not sure if that "available in the US only" pertains to the chatbot as a whole, or just the image-generation. I don't know how you get access. @GeoffBeamish do you know where to (attempt) to use this thing, or sign up to beta access?

Probably if it can't be widely used - if you have to sign up to be a beta tester and they don't just allow anyone - this won't resolve YES on it, I would guess, though that's up to @PS.

@chrisjbillington I can confirm I have used this AI. I’m a meta employee though so I defer to @PS Or any others if they are also able to use the chat bot on Instagram.

@GeoffBeamish works for me too

@firstuserhere Which app? Edit: sorry, instagram, got it. I'll check too.

@chrisjbillington This one is whatsapp, havent tried with instagram. Have had this for over a month, i'm not in any beta program by default, might be some rollout that got to me early tho

@firstuserhere Hm, I don't seem to have it, this is WhatsApp, I tried in Instagram and Facebook messenger as well

@chrisjbillington Thanks for flagging, will try to get a better idea of what it is as soon as I have some time, and get back to you

@PS Great! So, to summarise for when you have time: the meta chatbot exists, and it sounds like it is available in the US, but not in Australia yet (where I am). Maybe it's not available to everyone in the US and maybe it's available to some people in Australia, I don't know. But it seems reasonably likely it's rolled out to some geographic areas and not others.

@chrisjbillington Thanks, that is very helpful. I'm in Europe, so will have to see whether I have access, or can get in via VPN, although right now I'm not sure yet where I would find the chat bot anyway. But if I can't get access myself, I'll still be able to read the reports.

@PS It's supposed to be in WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, but only its presence in WhatsApp was verified by someone in this thread. WhatsApp is probably going to base your location on your phone number, so VPN might not help if it isn't available in Europe yet.

@chrisjbillington Honestly, I'm stuck on that one.
1. It seems that Meta released its AI back in September, and people don't seem to have noticed.
2. I can't access it in my Facebook and Whatsapp, and don't know whether that's because I'm outside the US or it's just not available to everybody yet.
3. I haven't yet found a good report or article describing whether it is available to the general public, and in what form.

If any one has good sources/info, please do tell me.

@PS If you’re unsure and have some time I’d encourage you to watch the keynote from meta connect: https://www.metaconnect.com/en/home

They’re very clear about releasing multiple public facing AIs in the form of agents and Meta AI

@GeoffBeamish I hate keynotes 😵‍💫
But more importantly, I'd really want to know more about the implementation, not just the announcement, before deciding

Meta has released an image generator via imagine.meta.com. This is gated behind a Facebook login and gated from some geographies but this is a generative model.

predicted NO

@GeoffBeamish Sounds like this market is about chatbots specifically, unfortunately.

Will it release a ChatGPT-like general-purpose chatbot to end users in 2023, either as a standalone product or integrated in Facebook or WhatsApp?

FWIW I don't think the Facebook/meta login is a problem, unsure if the geographic gating would be (Manifold market creators are quickly learning these edge cases recently, lol).

Edit: Edit: darn, was hoping to use this to bet on image AI markets, but no meta image generator for me yet

predicted YES

@chrisjbillington Fair, technically this product fulfills the title but i agree with your caveat

@GeoffBeamish As @chrisjbillington said, this market is only about text AIs. I realize the title doesn't reflect this, but I hope the description is clear enough
