On this first Wednesday in January, in Matignon, it is dusk in the early afternoon. And while Élisabeth Borne's car, returning from her very long lunch with Emmanuel Macron, makes the gravel of the courtyard crunch, everyone holds their breath. But the head of government remains silent, letting nothing of the current discussions filter through. Only one internal source assures, after the fact, that there was talk of “back-to-school priorities”, “certain ministerial adjustments”. But that “the word resignation was not uttered”.

From Le Canard Enchaine dated 1/3/24, which among other things, highlights the cancellation of the first government weekly meeting in 2024 by Emmanuel Macron, and relays rumors from unnamed sources about a change of government cabinet, including PM Borne “only if the President can find someone better” (four names of potentials are listed in the article).

“Macron hinted recently that he would do something in January to reinforce the unity of what he cast as a divided, doubting France. “It is time for a meeting with the nation . . . to give a sense of hope again and appetite for the future,” he said. A government reshuffle to name a new prime minister looks likely after the immigration fight.”
