Definitions and Details:
"Next general election" refers to the next UK parliamentary general election following the July 2024 election. Legally, this must take place no later than August 15, 2029.
"Leader of the Labour Party" is defined as the person officially recognized as leader by the party's executive bodies. If there is an interim or acting leader on polling day, they will be considered the leader for the purposes of this market.
If Andy Burnham serves as Labour leader but is replaced prior to the general election, this market will resolve to NO.
The primary source of verification will be official announcements from the Labour Party and the UK Parliament websites.
Background
On June 19, 2026, Andy Burnham won a major by-election in the constituency of Makerfield, securing his return to the House of Commons as an MP. This victory officially triggered his resignation as the Mayor of Greater Manchester, a position he held since 2017. Burnham’s return to Westminster is widely interpreted by political analysts and allies as a direct launchpad to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the leadership of the governing Labour Party. Recent polling suggests Burnham remains a highly popular figure within the party and the wider public as Starmer faces ongoing leadership scrutiny.
