While decentralization, uniqueness of items, authenticity of purchase and play-to-earn features have been touted as innovations blockchain/NFTs can provide for gameplay and the gaming industry, we have also seen many attempts at implementation (eg: ubisoft NFTs, quartz, which players did not show interest) and platform decisions that affect viability of development (eg: steam representing almost 70% of pc digital downloads does not allow crypto games).

Yes

Means blockchain gaming or blockchain features will provide gameplay value beyond its current scope.

No

@HeyFoxxer yeah, sure! 😁

I'm a big crypto skeptic, but a year or two ago I decided to do some r&d in this when someone offered me a 1 mil startup funding bounty to use their game-focused blockchain tools. I aborted the project in under a month; wasn't worth the headache.

it's pretty straightforward: blockchain doesn't have anything to add to games. most of the claims are bunk at best and more often than not completely pointless. the best pie-in-the-sky claims about what it could do in the future are:

  • not supported now

  • aren't actually on anyone's roadmap

  • are being spouted by talkers, not makers, who know little-to-nothing about the nitty gritty of game design, code, and even the underlying crypto tech

  • are not desired by developers, and often not even cared about by players

  • have no consideration for funding or licensing issues

  • rely more on traditional web 2.0 server tech than otherwise; a "decentralized" game won't happen unless it's an entirely community and crowd-made OSS project

  • are harder to make using blockchain than just doing it the normal way

Working on that project was like showing up to someone saying they would give you the tools to go to the moon, but all they brought was rocks and a bucket of water; you had to do all the materials processing, research, design, and invention yourself.
