This question will resolve Yes if the program implemented is a full universal basic income program where every citizen receives a guaranteed income regardless of their existing income level or employment status.
for the context of this question the full basic income will have to be higher than the current International Poverty Line (IPL) defined by the World Bank according to the status of the income of the country adjusted for Purchasing power parity. currently its "a global absolute minimum, to $2.15 per day (in PPP). In addition, as of 2022, $3.65 per day in PPP for lower-middle income countries, and $6.85 per day in PPP for upper-middle income countries."

  • Update 2025-07-16 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): In response to a question about Canada's 'Guaranteed Basic Income' (GBI), the creator has clarified that the official name of a program does not matter.

The market can resolve to YES if a program like Canada's GBI is implemented, as long as it meets the market's core criteria: being guaranteed for every citizen regardless of their existing income level or employment status.

  • Update 2025-11-27 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): The creator has clarified the methodology for determining if a UBI program meets the income threshold:

    • The nominal payment amount must be converted to PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) equivalent using the country's PPP conversion factor

    • This PPP-adjusted amount is then compared against the World Bank's International Poverty Line for that country's income classification

    • For the Marshall Islands example: a $800/year nominal payment converts to approximately $738/year PPP, which falls short of the required $1,332/year PPP threshold for upper-middle income countries

@MaxE the poverty line at upper-middle income countries is higher than 800$

@MaxE hey Max E I just read the site you provided but i don't think it reaches the required amount , I just put it in chatgpt and currently the threshold for Marshall Islands would be amount above ~$1,443/year nominal (to hit $1,332 PPP) so we are close but not quite there yet.
feel free to discuss the answer or provide more info.

here is the the answer chatgpt provided :
Does $800/year Meet or Exceed the Threshold?
No. The payment is in nominal U.S. dollars ($800/year). To compare against the PPP-adjusted IPL:

  • Latest available PPP conversion factor for the Marshall Islands (World Bank, 2011 benchmark extrapolated): ~1.083 LCU (USD) per international dollar. This means $1 USD buys ~0.923 international dollars worth of goods/services locally (1 / 1.083).

  • PPP-equivalent value: $800 × 0.923 ≈ $738/year PPP.

  • Threshold: $1,332/year PPP.

  • Shortfall: $738 < $1,332 (only ~55% of the required level).

Even against the global minimum ($784/year PPP), it falls slightly short, but the country-adjusted line is the binding criterion here.

@Gugra ope, it says full UBI here. yeah, this shouldn't resolve.

It seems from googling that in Canada Guaranteed Basic Income and Universal Basic Income are two different beasts, and the former has larger support. How will you resolve if Canada implements the former, not the latter? https://www.ubiworks.ca/guaranteed-livable-basic-income

@JussiVilleHeiskanen hello jussi I just read a summary of the bill and I would say it is fair to resolve the market as yes if the Canada Guaranteed Basic Income is guaranteed for every citizen regardless of their existing income level or employment status
