According to the Arcus Foundation, there were still more than 730 chimpanzees in government or private research facilities in the US in their most recent report, with ongoing efforts to retire them to sanctuaries. The 2015 designation of captive chimpanzees as 'endangered' under the Endangered Species Act has accelerated this process.
