My roommates and I are considering getting a 6-person, inflatable hot tub to install in our backyard. We all LOVE hot tubs, and it is a travesty that there are essentially no hot tubs in San Francisco! We would enjoy the relaxation elements and good conversations that result from hot tubs, and a hot tub would definitely add to our social capital among friends.
However, we have no experience with inflatable hot tubs. They are moderately expensive (we are looking at options between $600-1,000), and require significant chemical and cleaning maintenance.
It is also most likely technically against our lease, and there is a chance the Presidio requires us to remove it. See: /CarsonGale/if-my-roommates-and-i-get-an-inflat
We would also need to figure out details around per-roommate contributions and if/when certain members leave the apartment, who keeps the hot tub.
Finally, we would likely need to get a small deck area installed for the hot tub to sit on.
If we do get a hot tub, we will take a vote among the 5 roommates at year-end to decide whether the purchase was ultimately worth it. The majority decision will decide the resolution of this market.

I enjoy a good hot tub but an inflatable hot tub sounds like a nightmare to deal with on a semi-permanent basis. Not only do you have all the downsides of a regular hot tub (expensive to run, constant maintenance, scary chemicals), but add the chore of making sure it’s inflated properly each day and the constant risk of catastrophic failure.
@ElliotDavies that is more than I would have thought, but individually since it would only be an extra $10-30 per month that definitely sounds worth it to me
