Background

Jeffrey Epstein was an American financier and child sex offender who died on August 10, 2019. He died in his jail cell, with the New York City medical examiner ruling his death a suicide by hanging. Time magazine's editors have historically shied away from selecting controversial figures in the United States following public backlash from naming Ayatollah Khomeini Man of the Year in 1979.
