Resolution criteria:

This market will resolve to "Yes" if, by October 13, 2025,

  1. Donald Trump or Congress take official action to abolish Indigenous People’s Day, or to issue a formal proclamation recognizing Columbus Day without acknowledging Indigenous Peoples' Day, AND

  2. At least one city or state that observes Indigenous People’s Day or an equivalent holiday officially or by proclamation on Columbus Day rescinds the law or proclamation and reverts to honoring Columbus Day explicitly and exclusively.

Otherwise the market will resolve to "No."

Background:

Columbus Day, observed on the second Monday of October, has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1937. In recent years, there has been a movement to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day on the same date, acknowledging the history and contributions of Native American communities. During his presidency, Donald Trump consistently issued proclamations celebrating Columbus Day without mentioning Indigenous Peoples' Day. In contrast, President Joe Biden has issued proclamations recognizing both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. (apnews.com)

Considerations:

  • Presidential Proclamations: While the President can issue proclamations to recognize holidays, the designation of federal holidays is determined by Congress. Therefore, a presidential proclamation alone does not change the status of a federal holiday.

  • State-Level Observances: The observance of Columbus Day varies by state. Some states have replaced or supplemented it with Indigenous Peoples' Day, while others continue to observe Columbus Day exclusively. (pewresearch.org)
