This is a market about whether Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron will have a handshake that lasts 15 seconds or more at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains.
## Description
We all know Trump and Macron have a history of crazy, competitive handshakes.
Back in 2017 they did a Bastille Day handshake that went on for nearly 30 seconds.
With them meeting again at the G7 in France (June 14 to 16, 2026), there is a good chance we get another power play. This market lets people bet on whether they will go for a long "death grip" handshake.
## Rules and resolution
The market is binary (YES/NO). It closes on June 17, 2026 at 23:59 UTC (after the summit ends. If for any reason the summit were to last longer than planned, we would resolve 24 hours after the end of the summit).
For the market to resolve to YES, there must be at least one (videographed) handshake between Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron during the G7 summit that lasts 15.0 (metric) seconds or longer. The G7 summit is scheduled for June 14 to June 16, 2026.
If no handshake of 15 seconds or longer is verified, or if they do not shake hands at all, the market resolves to NO.
## resolution details and edge cases
Here are the exact rules for how this will be measured and resolved.
1. Definition of a handshake: A handshake starts when their palms clasp and fingers close around the other's hand. It ends when they completely release physical contact (their hands separate). If they keep their hands touching but release the clasp (for example, tapping each other's arm while hands are apart), that does not count at all, that's not a handshake.
2. Timing verification: The duration will be measured using video footage (no photographs, even time-stamped, as they are not continuous, and could hide a temporary interruption of the hand-shake).
We will look at official G7 broadcast feeds, pool footage, or videos uploaded by major news outlets (like AP, Reuters, AFP, CNN, BBC, France 24).
- The video must show the handshake from start to finish in a single continuous shot.
- If the camera cuts away during the handshake and cuts back, we cannot add the time of the two separate clips together. The continuous clasp shown on screen must be 15.0 seconds or more.
- If there are multiple handshakes during the summit, the longest single handshake is what counts. We will not sum the times of different handshakes.
3. Written news reports: If there is no single continuous video showing the full 15 seconds, but at least two major news agencies (from AP, Reuters, AFP, Bloomberg) explicitly state in their written articles that the handshake lasted "15 seconds", "15 seconds or more", or a specific number higher than 15 seconds (like "20-second handshake"), this will also count for a YES resolution. If only one outlet reports it and there is no video proof, it is not enough.
4. Borderline timing: If video timing is close (e.g. 14.8 seconds) and there is no written confirmation of the exact time, the market will resolve to NO. We need clear proof of at least 15.0 seconds. We will use a video editor to count the frames if necessary (using either the fps declared in the video file, or if it's not specified assuming 30fps or 60fps standard video).
5. Cancelation or absence: If either leader fails to attend the summit, or if the summit is canceled, the market resolves to NO.
6. If the summit is postponed to a date after June 17, 2026, we will extend the market until the summit happens, within a maximum time frame of one year. If the summit does not happen after one year (June 17, 2027), we will resolve to NO.
7. Private handshakes: If they shake hands behind closed doors and it is not captured on camera or reported by the specified news agencies, it does not exist for the purpose of this market.
8. Wearable items: If either leader is wearing gloves, the handshake still counts as long as the clasp criteria are met. If either of the presidents is wearking a fake hand duaring the handshake, it still counts as a handshake.
9. If Donald J Trump brags about the length of the handshake, but the handshake is not on video and/or he is the only witness, his testimony will not be trusted.
