I am counting verbal words, not signs. As of the end of Feb 2023, my child is 16.5 mo old and usually only saying one word at a time, with very occasional two word phrases. My child started saying his first word around 10.5 mo

This morning, River said to me: Baba (bottle)… more more more… please! Meaning, please may I have some more bottle? I am counting this as a three word phrase, as these are all words he uses independently, and all of them were being used to create the meaning in the phrase

Update from March 2023: mostly still using one word at a time, but sometimes he does use two words in fairly close succession, like: “Mama! Dada?” (My interpretation: Mama, where is Dada?) Or: “More! More! … Bread! Bread!

I would say it should be three words that he learned independently. But he only has to do it one time, not start a phase of doing so regularly

Do they need to be three separate words mixed into a novel phrase, or is repetition of an existing three word phrase sufficient?

e.g. does something like parroting back “I love you” count, or does it need to be more like “More milk please”?

End of June 2023 is 20.5 months = 1.7 years. Just going by a quick google search, seems like the benchmark for three-word phrases is around 2.5 years.

  • "As part of language development, your child will begin to use two-word sentences at around two years. By age three, they'll be able to use sentences with three or more words"

  • "Most toddlers begin imitating three-word phrases at around 2 ½ years of age."

  • Wiki: "Between the ages of 18 to 24 months, children learn how to combine two words such as no bye-bye and more please. Three-word and four-word combinations appear when most of the child's utterances are two-word productions."

@Meg Great info! I will add, there is a wide distribution of when kids start doing things that is highly variable based on the kid and what they spend their time practicing. 2.5 is not the age at which a large percentage of children first begin uttering 3 word phrases but the age by which most children are uttering 3 word phrases. I don’t know what percent of kids who start saying 3 word phrases by 1.7 years tho, it’s possible that it is a not insignificant percentage

but I made this poll quickly and just for fun, and I haven’t decided how to bet on it yet. Mostly my hold is past the obvious milestones like first word or first step, and I thought it might be fun to guess about some upcoming thing so I just picked something
