Recently, rumors have appeared on the /r/JPL subreddit indicating the possibility of layoffs of 250-400 employees on 11/13 or 11/14. Interestingly, users who claim to have insider information have DISAGREED; some have said the layoffs are happening and others have said they are not. This market is a fun way to speculate and blow off a little steam at a scary time.

The market will resolve to yes if a layoff triggering the California WARN Act occurs (not “is announced”) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 11/10/24-11/16/24, and to no otherwise. [EDIT: added “California” to disambiguate]

Just to alert all traders, a layoff meeting these criteria has just been announced for tomorrow, 11/13. I will wait until it concludes to resolve, but I now believe it is virtually certain the market will resolve to yes.

@anonymousjpler does this spell doom for NASA in general?

Because the Federal and California triggers are slightly different, “WARN Act” is ambiguous as originally written. Here I mean the California WARN Act, and I will edit the description to indicate this.
