I am slightly confused; is the version you see in NYC used for resolution, or is the fact that it's still called gulf of Mexico outside US relevant?

Outside the US they have settled for this it seems.

Did something happen?

@ChadCotty GNIS updated

What’s the case for NO here?

@SaiVazquez deep state geologists preventing the change in the database Google stated it would follow

@skibidist Wouldn’t that be the case for YES? NO in this market means that Google Maps does change “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” by the end of February.

The case for NO is that Google has stated they will make the change once GNIS updates, and the executive order mandates the latter must happen within 30 days (i.e. before Feb 19). There would have to be some holdup or resistance for this not to happen – which I think is totally possible, fwiw.

Work of art

@skibidist It's missing the 51st state

@Odoacre and the Trump Strip :(

Looks like there is a big gap between the bets in both

who even knows how far this will go..

@BlueDragon youre our resident expert on this!

@strutheo in trumpstate I know nothing

I bet YES despite the headlines, because what Google ACTUALLY said is that they will follow guidance from the Geographic Names Information System, which is a non-answer. Of course they will, they always have.

So this question is actually, will the name change propagate to GNIS by the end of February?

Unless the President finds some way around them, this would happen some time after the Foreign Names committee of the US Board of Geographic Names meets to approve the change... and they have really no incentive to rush, if they make this change at all. Per this article:

There are major roadblocks to renaming the Gulf of Mexico, according to Leo Dillon, the former chair of the Foreign Names Committee. He said that the committee’s procedures allow only one name for high seas, and it usually reflects the most commonly used name.

I am not yet convinced the administration has gotten any better at going up against librarians 🤷.
