Will I receive a call from a Detective to file a harassment report by 11pm Sunday?

Resolved
NO

Backstory in more-than-you-need detail:

  • I know a guy who is slightly more than a passing acquaintance but who I wouldn't consider a friend.

  • He's asked my advice (I'm trained in coaching and addiction recovery support) with his wife who he suspects is an alcoholic and has mental health issues.

  • I was very clear with him that I'm happy to talk as long as it's not a secret or out of the bounds of his relationship, and he agreed.

  • This was a month or so ago. Over the weekend, she stsrred sending me harassing, insulting, vaguely threatening messages ad nauseum including finding me on social platforms and repeatedly requesting to connect, calling me names, trying to call me repeatedly. This went on for about 28 hours without any response from me.

  • Eventually I told her explicitly to stop contacting me so I would have it on record. She doubled down. I called the police. (they live three blocks from me in our bougie neighbourhood and I didn't know if it will escalate)

  • The police were meant to call back last night but didn't. I called again this morning. They say a detective will call me to file a report.

  • As an aside: I've spoken to three dispatchers and one officer so far. All of them seemed to give me the vibe - upon saying she's the wife of a guy I know - that they don't believe I didn't either sleep with her husband or otherwise bring it on myself. (I didn't. I would be honest if anything had happened)

  • They also don't seem to think this is urgent when they ask "has she threatened to kill you or shoot you?" (Wtf I'm clearly back in the US I guess)

Will the detective my call has been assigned to call me this week? Resolution is obvious - Yes if I get a call and have a report on file. No if I still haven't received a call by 11p on Sunday the 12th. I won't make another call to the PD unless things somehow escalate.

I'm thinking about a separate market around whether this unhinged wine drunk mum starts gangstalking me in my neighbourhood.

It's funny how much we argue about funding the police, but everyone also seems to understand that when you need to file a police report the police will resist, and if you ever need to report a crime, it will not be solved.

@WrongoPhD I agree and I made the same statement while this was happening. I will say that if it weren't for the insistence of friends (and tbh maybe some curiosity), I wouldn't have bothered. Not because of personal feelings about the police themselves, but rather: I didn't feel immediately threatened and moreso, because calling the police isn't really my mechanism, particularly as a piece of paper doesn't stop an unhinged person from doing anything irrational.
I've been living outside of the US for many many years and only recently returned to a fairly liberal US city and the duality between "defund the police!" and "why won't the police do anything about" xyz is really something.

Still no call, and the "how tell us how we did by filling out this customer service survey" text messages have dwindled. 34 hours then I resolve No.

(Nevermind, description implies you are back in the US, it just parsed as sarcasm initially.)

@brp never stops feeling surreal when guns or death threats come up in the most seemingly innocuous scenarios and it feels like par for the course now that I'm back in the US (I was away for more a decade)

I've received multiple text messages from the PD so far this week since speaking to an officer on Monday. These messages are either an update with the call record number or a request for survey feedback. So far, no phone calls or other contact from a Detective to formalise a report.
